    Hi,

I was wondering how someone in the countries you come from someone who is or was serving in the military is treated by society. I think tht in the US you there is a lot of respect for veterans and people who are serving in the military. In my home country Germany thats (what I think is sad) a lot less the case. Sometimes I have the impression you even hve to be ashamed especially if you live in a left or left-liberal environment even though you went to Afghanistan at you live risk basically on your peopels decision.

In more conservative areas of society thats may be less of a problem, but still the german army (the Bundeswehr) is not getting enough soldiers and staff since the abolishment of compulsory military service due to the lack of reputation of the,Bundeswehr.

I think even though you oppose the wars your country is or was doing you still need to hve some respect for the people who fought for your country.

Fairly sure there is no nexus between this thread and Food & Wine, so maybe a mod will eventually bounce in here and move it to the correct place on the site for you.

American respect for their own soldiers has gone up and down over the years. I never heard the phrase, "thank you for your service" until after 9/11. It's now a normal part of the lexicon (at least for now). I don't know why German's don't respect their own military. The Bundeswehr is an extremely professional force. It just has the limitations of most other European militaries; little money for training and new equipment.
