I think it's simple sexism. A King outranks a Queen so a Queen's husband can't be called a King. It doesn't come up very often. There have only been 4 other Queens in the last 1,000 years. Mary I, Elizabeth I, Mary II and Victoria.
No she won't abdicate. Yes, I imagine Harry and Meghan will be amongst the 30 mourners allowed to attend a funeral under present rules.
Under Parliamentary law the Queen's husband has the title, prince consort. The only way to become King is to inherit the title. The situation is different for women.
Think of how difficult his role was. In the days of patriarchy he had to always be one step behind and public ally defer to her
During the Coronation he had to kneel before her and touch the crown to show deference. Apparently he resisted the idea at first.
The guy was raised up to be the king of Denmark and Greece, but was rather broke and exiled. He landed a sweet job to be the highest paid assistant of the world. Get a new royal title and mingle with the elite for his entire life. That kind of is his main accomplishment. And it's nice he fought in the war. But so many did. Sure.. as for how difficult it is to be an assistent. It's a role plenty of people fulfill as a fulltime job. I doubt many got butlers, other assistants, cooks and cleaners, free lodging etc. So yeah... I do question how hard that job is. Did he had a burnout? I doubt it.
I understand there is some outrage about his somewhat off putting sense of humour being brought up by the media but c'mon, the guy was 99 ... I bet he was a blast to sit and have a beer with ... I've known plenty of 90+ geezers and they don't give a flying rat's ass about PC bullshit ...
The married in bride becomes the Queen Consort but the married in man is the Prince Consort. That is just how they do it. Probably to make sure the man cannot over throw his wife by keeping him a step behind in title.
Ditto. I have a few elderly neighbors and you wouldn't believe some of the stuff they blurt out. It's hilarious.
Yah - This guy was a real charmer a real Floater - an absolute Mensch Maybe this - inhuman Parasitic Slug - will finally get his life's wish & Kill us all, if some weird COVID experiment, or improperly tested ............................................ Vaccine manipulation doesn't get us first ............................................... Just more Caviar for the Upper Crust
I really admire the Royal family. It's not easy to be born into duty. And Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip--- I am in awe of both really. I'm thinking Prince William will carry the torch well.
Indeed. Can one imagine how many restrictions they had as a couple / family?? Being in the public eye all the time....... with every action and word being analysed and criticized by folks who don't stop and think. Pr. Phillip did an admirable job maintaining as much of a balance between being himself and following the established protocols. She wore the crown ......he wore the pants....as has been described. He did a lot more than folks realize or give him credit for. He never wanted the attention for his works. He had an intelligent, inquisitive mind with many sophisticated interests. He was ahead of his time with his ideas and progressive thinking. He did not suffer fools... and could be abrasive and impatient.......only because he had little tolerance for pettiness and small talk. He was the strength behind Elizabeth and her primary consultant on matters. . A rue partner. What may have appeared in public rituals......is a far cry form the true reality of their relationship. He wanted a simple funeral...... and due to the pandemic ....he will probably get his wishes. It is also sad that he passed on Pr Charles/ Camilla's 16th wedding anniversary. RIP Pr. Phillip........... you did rally good......particularly having started with a very troubled childhood. ........Mother diagnosed with Schizophrenia, Parents divorced. Family exiled from Greece.....so his mindset was that of an immigrant. He was taken care of by the Mountbattens..who became his family...... A lot more to this man than what appears on the surface.
A monarchy is an illogical anachronism. However in the UK there is some technical advantage so long as the royals stay away from influencing political policy. One example is that in America (I believe) the President is both the top political leader, but also the commander in chief of the forces, and also heavily ‘concerned’ in the appointment of judges. In the UK the monarch is the head of the armed forces, the judiciary, and the church. Allegiance is sworn to the monarch, not the Prime Minister. Which is just as well considering what a racist lying self serving neo fascist Boris Johnson is (who is now smirking that his Brexit is causing trouble in Ireland). If push came to shove and a genuinely dark political dictatorship emerged in the UK, the armed forces can resist legally on behalf of the Monarch. The law can also act ‘independently’ under the laws made (admittedly by politicians) The British constitution, unwritten, is said to be a series of checks and balances avoiding tyranny. The irony is the wider British ‘establishment’ (same schools, same families, same culture) acts as a kind of collective tyranny over the population. The Queen in that context has played a near perfect hand throughout her life, and Phillip has supported her in that. A degree of respect is due, but not deference.
I watched a lot o fit......and it was not only tastefully done.....it was informative........providing much information about the man that had not been public before. BBC is a class act.....and does an excellent job reporting the news........ Prince Phillip was not your ordinary fellow..........and nor was his death. Wait until the queen dies......Will folks complain about the coverage then too?? There are always those that complain.
Oh God, it will go on for weeks when Her Majesty goes. Two whole days of absolutely nothing but Prince Phillip is nothing compared to what is to come. Then there'll be Charles's coronation, you think Royal weddings get too much coverage? Wait till you see a coronation.
