You didn't get the big picture - and your claim is unsupported.

    1) it is not just the fracking industry - it is true that there are benefits to cheap oil - but there are other factors in play here.

Your claim is defeated in general - if you are claiming "Deflation is a good thing" Lower prices however can be. It depends - and this is what you have no considered - or at least shown evidence of understanding of this concept.

    2) haven't done a direct cost benefit in comparison to fracking. and there are many ways to look at how one might do such a calculation - none of which you appear to have considered - never mind addressed ?

If you were to calculate the costs/benefits of the decrease in oil price over a short term ... like the last two weeks - your argument is hopelessly lost.

The savings of individuals due to a decrease in price of gas - compared to the losses in the Fracking /Oil sector - do not remotely add up to the losses - just one company had 64 Billion dollars in market cap wiped out - and there are hundreds of companies to consider - and the service industry - Halliburton - and on and on.

The numbers would not get much better moving out to 1,2 or even 6 months- "Assuming the oil price stayed Low" - which is may not and nor does it have to - the shot was fired -at the right moment - and the damage was done.

You have some work to do to support your claim partner.

On the contrary ... the people who began talking about this issue and said lower oil prices would destroy the American economy need to prove their allegations.

The Russians know that they will get a lot of proceeds from Germany and the EU later on, they can afford an oil price war with either the US or OPEC. But, the main root of this scenario is the ongoing crisis now coming from a country that benefits a lot with this price war, China.

Russia flooded the market with oil and caused our oil prices to go down. I'm paying thirty five cents less for a gallon of gasoline ever since he did it.

The Saudis learned not to flood the market decades ago.

Most people here and across the world believe that we are dependant on foreign oil. In reality we have never been a desperate dependence of foreign oil. We just want to use the global supply up before using ours up...

Well you have not been paying attention have you "Invictus"
Because it was the Saudi's who chose to flood the market with Cheap Oil in this instance

    I will repeat :
    I
t was NOT Russia who initially flooded the market with Cheap Oil. Russia simply refused
the Saudi demands that they & OPEC curtail their production. It was the Saudi response
of knocking off the Spigots that created the precipitous drop in Price. Russia simply went
along with the Saudi move and turned on their taps.

What MOST people don't seem to realize, and can't seem to get through their thick skulls is this :wall:*
Saudi and Russian aims and goals in all of this are the same ! - Saudi and Russia are NOT
............. involved in a Price War against each other. They are involved in a Price War against
    .................................................................................................. "The American Fracking Industry"

As soon as the complete, utter & unrecoverable destruction of "American Fracking"
is achieved the Russki's & Saudi's will - Like MAGIC resolve their differences

For all of the American attempts to interfere and Piddle around, issuing their threats and sanctions
......... ................ aimed at damaging the Russian Economy it turns out that it is PUTIN who opened

PUTIN Unleashes Strategic Hell On The US

Because if there was ever a moment where Putin and Russia could inflict maximum pain
on the United States via its Achilles’ heel, the financial markets and its unquenchable thirst
for debt, it was this month just as the coronavirus was reaching its shores.

Too much deflation is disaster just like too much inflation. A little of it is no problem.

True. The main point being made is that deflation is generally a bad sign - if it is happening generally - throughout the economy - not as the normal function of the business cycle - happening at different times in different sectors.

Inflation on the other hand - in moderation - is a good sign. So then - If I am trying to assess dark clouds on the horizon - that deflation would be one.

I wouldn't say that we have seen this yet - oil is just one commodity - and one that moves up and down like a top - although strangely - Gold has also gotten hammered the last week.

No -- we have not seen real deflation in a long long time - which makes this cloud particularly scary if sighted as we are way overdue from a historical perspective.

One of the big clouds I see are negative or near negative interest rates - (and I am not alone) - Capital is so scared right now -that it will sit idle earning nothing - or even negative - rather than be anywhere in the market. There is nowhere safe - no better place.

This was going on prior to corona and the oil shock which caused a collapse in the oil sector like a house of cards - anyone having anything to do with Fracking being hit the worst.

Chucky was proposing a 750 Billion injection today - " I’m proposing an immediate and initial infusion of at least $750 billion to wage war against coronavirus and the economic crisis it is now causing and get money directly into hands of American people"

That would be on top of a deficit that is already projected at 1.2 or more so near 2 Trillion - and we are not accounting for the revenue decrease Corona will cause - which will be who knows - 3-500 Billion minimum.

We could see a 2.5 Trillion dollar deficit brewing - which is a mind boggling amount and very dark cloud.

The the global slowdown was on prior to corona a well - another cloud.

Too many of these on the horizon for my liking. "Perfect Storms" do happen from time to time.

Yes, but those were the averages. So if you were paying more, it's likely that you're always paying more no matter who the president is, or would be if you no longer live in the same area.

Can it be due to a lower money supply with less spending in the economy? Supply and demand?

For me it is a bad sign. It shows that government is printing money to cover debt and overspendinig.

It is the natural result of making decisions based on hysteria instead of common sense.

Business involves competition. Businesses need to adapt to it. If the Russians and Saudis want to sell oil cheaply, we should buy it, not try to compete against it.

    hysteria

There is no excuse for it. Voters need to be educated about government spending.

Even though hysteria is the name of the game at the moment, I recommend you try to avoid it.

    Instead of Waking Up,
to the very real DANGERs of their immanent Predicament, I see people celebrating and/or

Some people are aware of the strategy of the United Nations and the banks to destroy the economies of 1st world countries, notably the U.S. and Europe, and that is a different topic than the current petroleum price war, although eliminating our access to fossil fuels to "save the planet" is certainly part of it.

The global elites and planners who aspire to enslave us, then get rid of the useless eaters, are more likely to use the current virus and resulting financial depression as the hastening points to bring us to heel, more than they are using the normal booms and busts of petroleum battles.

If the financial crash doesn't do it, It appears the majority will vote soon for our own demise in the name of "democracy". They'd prefer we go along willingly.

That is a different topic though.

And...since I can't do anything about any of that personally, I'll just enjoy the $1.75 gasoline while it lasts. ;)

Help me understand what is hysterical about a recommendation that we as a society educate people about government spending. I rarely deal with teenagers but I am interested in your answer.

I think you wandered way off your own topic of a price war on shale.

Putin is not going to cut his own throat economically. He'll have to cave pretty soon. $30/barrel is the floor before Russia feels extreme economic pain.

    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/oil-gamble-upended-putin-promise-045825788.html

Meanwhile, Trump took advantage of the low price to top off the tanks of U.S. oil reserves, so "Thanks, Russia!"

Unethanolized gasoline (sometimes called 'marine grade?') is shelf stable, unlike 'regular', 'mid' and 'supreme' at most pumps, which turn sortof varnishy when the ethanol breaks down and fowls some engines.
