Anybody trying to kill the US shale oil industry is about six years too late. The investments have been made and the infrastructure is in place. Any stoppage due to low oil prices can easily be restarted again when they inevitably go back up.

The tiny Russian economy doesn't have the clout pull this sort of thing off and cheap oil is going to hurt them as well.

The shale industry has been self destructing since inception - never made money in 11 years - and now in a huge amount of debt. Investors had been refusing to put more good money after bad for a couple years .. ramping up in 2019 and was collapsing prior to Corona.

It was a well time strike - and that was all it took - the industry was crushed - Occidental went from a company worth 80 Billion to a company worth 16 Billion - in one day. It was a knock-out punch. The company is now worth 10 Billion - and has 70 Billion in debt.

Shale oil needs 70 dollar oil to have any hope to be in the black.

Russia rejected a new OPEC cut. It wants to keep its production up and it will use the crisis to further
undermine U.S. oil fracking production. As the whole fracking boom in the U.S. is build on fraud the
move might well be successful.....Russia does not have a budget deficit and is well positioned to

My only concern is my fellow industry employees here in Houston. Shell is an operator, so we're in much vulnerable to the drop in prices, but I have friends at Halliburton who have been furloughed. I also know a couple other services companies are going through a rough patch.

I think the chain of events here is funny.
1. Pootin refuses to cooperate with OPEC.
2. Saudi Arabia gets pissed off and expands the production with a clear stated goal that it’s to hurt paRussia and force it back to negotiations.
3. MSM at first provide accurate reports of the situation and predict Russia going through very rough patch.
4. Pootin and his cronies start to tell internal consumers of their propaganda that wise Pootin started this mess to destroy American shale industry. Never mind the fact that the US shale wasn’t really competing against Russian or Saudi Arabia’s oil in Europe in the first place.
5. Leftist MSM and conspiracy nuts picked up these claims and run around like chickens without their heads claiming that this whole thing is a Russian design.

Sometimes it kills me - Russian propaganda machine is better than many realize. They make ridiculous claims and many pick them up at face value.
Now, anyone who has even a little bit of brain in their heads ought to think about this - shale extraction involves a lot of capital, equipment and infrastructure installed at extraction site. Let’s say prices go down to a point where it’s not profitable to extract that oil. Guess what happens next? I’ll tell you what happens next - any management of the oil company will put a fence around the extraction area, lay off workers, hire a few security guards and will leave things as is. Most oil companies can literally conserve the operation for quite a long time with minimal costs. Any lost jobs will be compensated by lower logistics costs - for the country the size of the US where even trains rely on fossil fuels, this is a big amount. So, in overall, the US economy would be fine. To kill the US shale industry SA would need to keep the prices of oil under $20 for quite a few years, maybe 10-20 years at the least. By the time the US shale industry dies Russia will collapse into 20+ different countries - they’ll go so broke, they won’t be able to afford their own food.

To sum this up - Saudi Arabia is beating the crap out of Russia, especially during the Coronavirus pandemic. Pootins propaganda machine paints Pootin as a Don Quixote fighting evil US of A. Fools think that Pootin is the warrior taking on big America when in reality Arabs are beating his economy into pulp.

Russian economy is 1/13 of the US economy. Russia’s population is roughly half of the US. That means 1 American is at least 6 Russians.

Yes...agreed. If somehow Putinka figured he could severly dent or outright destroy the shale and fracking here in the US was a fools errand.

There are a few sites in the Bakken play area (Williston NDak area) , where they've been shelved for the time being. That area has light sweet crude close to surface.....and there's much deeper ones also.

At the moment it's a " spring break up" in some places from warmer temps and sites and fields get sloppy. Covid19 has slowed things down (for now), until this blows over and after that it will/may be full steam ahead.
