Is she really going to step down? Or will this turn out to be untrue? With everything that's happened with him should Prince Charles even assume the throne?

Well, the queen can die any moment due to advanced age.
Last I read about it, Charles isn’t extremely popular. Elizabeth could be the last monarch that served full term before U.K. turns into a republic.

Stepping down is best thing Queen Elizabeth could do. Let Charles handle the problems - and believe me, they have a lot of problems. The only hope now to preserve the throne is Prince William and Kate. They are true royals, even though she wasn't of the manor born.

**** that, we own you Queen Elizabeth II. Get out there and do your job or go find a 2 bedroom flat.

If Charles gets in Australia would be much more open to a republic.

It's a pity they can't skip Charles and Camilla and go straight to Wills and Kate. Would be better.

It would be in the Empire's best interest to go with Prince WIlliam and Kate. And if I were an advisor to the Queen, I'd tell her to do just that, for the preservation of the English Empire.

I've no particular respect for monarchy but it is easy to appreciate Queen Elizabeth for her wartime service. She trained and worked as a mechanic and driver of trucks and ambulances. Did well enough to be promoted. That's a bunch more than our last four Presidents of the USA can claim.

The woman deserves to spend her final years without the stress of her peculiar job.

The UK is still an Empire, even if the Monarchy is informal. Try telling the Queen of England that she's a commoner, she'll dismiss you out of hand.

What power would he be assuming? Hosting visiting heads of state and opening sessions of Parliament?
As an outsider I don't really see a king or queen of England having much actual power these days.
Is this really a big deal to the English?

We can hope Charles reign will be particularly short for whatever reason.
    He is a cad!

And "they" get upset over Andrew?

The Empire has SFA to do with the Monarchy. The British Empire ended in 1997 when Hong Kong reverted back to Chinese control. Maybe you should collaborate with Google on the issue. :)

You think the loss of a single territory meant that the crown dissolved? So let me guess, you don't formally recognize the Japanese monarchy either.

The Crown did not dissolve. Hong Kong was the last vestige of the 'British Empire.' The Crown/the Monarchy does not = British Empire.

I don't think you and I are going to get anywhere. Every nation exists at its capital. One of the things the Japanese insisted upon even after we wanted unilateral victory, was the recognition of the crown. Since Britain is still a part of the UK, the empire still exists. It merely shrunk.

The UK is the United Kingdom, not the British Empire.

(And no...the Japs did not want a Japanese Crown to be recognised. They wanted their Emporer recognised and the US facilitated that. Japan does not have a King or a Queen.)

Where are you getting your evidence, do you have a source for your information? While I am neither British nor a citizen of the Commonwealth I am going to have to go with Bush Lawyer on this issue.
Maybe you are correct but I am not seeing it that way in my limited scope of world affairs.

Why do you think they still address them as the king/queen? What do you think they're the king/queen of? What do you think Prince Harry is the Prince of? So if we went back down to the original 13 colonies, we're no longer the US?

That doesn't really answer my question.

I believe Queen Elizabeth is considered Queen of the Commonwealth.

Elizabeth is the Queen of England, and as a remnant of the days of Empire, in some Constitutions (including that of Australia....once part of the British Empire) she is acknowledged as having a role in our system of Government through the Australian appointed Governor-General whose daily job is mostly cutting ribbons, opening school fetes, unveiling plaques, greeting dignitaries from overseas, hosting 'garden parties' and formal dinners, rubber-stamping Legislation and nodding at the Constitutional aspects of how our Constitution works. When Elizabeth dies, I reckon most 'Commonwealth' Countries, including Australia, will ditch the Crown and we will run as a democratic Republic with some Aussie Head of State to look after all that ribbon cutting etc.

And that's all good and well for Australia. Let's cut to the meat and bones of this, though the Empire no longer expands beyond UK/British territory, it is still in existence. Even in an informal state where parliament now has predominate control over the State. She still has symbolic importance, as does her successors down the royal family line.

There's no need to further diminish what they've diminished themselves.

There is no Empire, as you asserted. That is all we are bitching about. There has been no "Empire" since 1997 when Hong Kong was handed back to China. Just accept that as fact, and if you doubt me, collaborate with Professor Google.

We're quibbling over a title, and I'm done with it, this has to be the stupidest argument in PF History.
