Do you have "CLOSE" friends who have different beliefs than you dealing with God?

I have several friends who are staunch liberals and staunch atheists, and boy do we get into some great arguments once in a while, but at the end of the day we still break bread and throw back a few beers.

    After reading...

Reading I want you to notice ONE THING... Where are all the atheist? I know there are like 10 that lurk in the religious forum to pounce upon unaware Christians... But, why didn't they post?

Are they suggesting that they are bigots? Only as Atheist talk to people of the same belief system?

BUT WAIT - we can go back and read SO MANY POSTS from (I call them the Peanut Gallery) posters of how Religous folks only hang with religious folks, but it, per the posts, seems opposite? It seems the Christians are the ones hanging with people of all beliefs and only a small portion of the Atheist are not bigots..

OH- they will come out now and say different, but I think it's already set in stone...

Cheer Leaders generally have nice, colourful pompoms...where's yours?

I happen to hold very strong theological beliefs...yet I could care less what others believe. But I'd be willing to bet none of them believe as I do. Hell even my wife is a devout atheist. Which brings me to my point...

IMO...ATHEISM is a byproduct of the evil the Christian churches have dumped on this Earth. People turn away from any notion of Gawd...because they learn the history and reality of these organizations...and say to themselves..."THIS is not Gawd-like behavior. Thus...there is no Gawd."

So aside from the millions of lives snuffed out by Christians...aside from the education and progress that the church has actively managed to stifle over the centuries...aside from all the other evil these organizations have done...their one true creation is ATHEISM.

    Congratulations Christians...

I guess for me Matthew 7:16 is a really relevant verse.

by their works ye shall know them.

and I don't think wars and conflict etc are what is meant by "their works".

I figure its how people live their lives, how they treat others, etc that is the measure of the person.

to me, I couldn't care if they were christians, athiests, muslims, zoroastrians or whatever ...

but there are people who talk the talk, but don't walk the walk, and treat others as inferior because they don't share their beliefs, and who behave as if what they believe is more important than our relationships with fellow human beings.

unless beliefs are informed by basic consideration and decency .....well, they don't mean much.

Yes well that all nice and lofty and all...but we ALL know them by their works...ALL OF THEIR WORKS. Cherry-picking which "works" you choose is comfy...but its also a half-truth.
So you exchange comfort for truth?
    Is that smart?

Question is if what you consider to be talking the talk but not walking the walk is actually to talk the talk and walk the walk.

Religion is basically a system of exclusion. Regardless of whatever tenets any religion may contain the basic idea is tribal in nature as it always distinguishes "us" from "them". I have yet to come across a religion that does not offer privileges to its adherents. So the fundamental tenet is always that if "you" want to become one of "us" then you must believe as "we" do.

true, but over the years I have met plenty of believers who, while their personal views might be that they know "the truth" they don't let this interfere with the way they relate to others.

many of these have even been people who have let their religious views inform their belief in showing compassion, kindness and helping others.

I really couldn't care less what religious views people like that hold.

they are good people whichever way you look at it.

Maybe we're not interested in answering a leading question just to be insulted in return.

I saw the thread after your rant in post #4 and that put me off getting involved in your thread. That and the fact I couldn't answer the poll since most of my friends don't share the same beliefs as me.
