In a court of law not in the gutters of the street, by the hand of justice, not at the hand of blood-lusting mobs,

So you would prefer a society as depicted in the Purge series only 24/7/365?

if the video is admitted they will, if the jury did not get to see it that would be unfair

if it can't be proved in court with a video like that, then cops can get away with murder

What jury could be found that would be impartial by the strictest definition, the one a defending lawyer would insist upon?

Remains to be seen, the case against 3 of them seems incredibly weak and they will doubtless be exonerated and sue the city for millions for unfair dismissal. The police union is rightly helping their defence so they don't have to worry about that and there's an informal network of ex-cops all over the country willing to offer them jobs afterwards, if they're still interested in law enforcement they'll probably be taken on by some small town police department in the back of beyond.

The 4th is more problematical, I think the jury will feel that they have to convict someone of something to appease the mob but probably on a lesser charge. I'm currently reading Sgt Stacey Koon's account of the Rodney King beating and these things take a depressingly inevitable course. Someone has to be the Olly North.

Or using reasonable force to detain a violent and drug crazed suspect?

Many corrupt souls get away with murder every day someplace in the world. Airplane pilots, doctors, blue-collar workers, nurses, lawyers, entertainers, politicians, farmers, sheep headers, dog trainers, jockeys, and on, and on, and on.

Just watch Discovery ID. It is actually astonishing how many unsolved murders remain unsolved, even though the police know who did it. And the proof is when they air these programs, they never get sued by the guilty proclaiming their innocence.

An astute reasonable analysis, and one I agree with. And I suspect the one that takes the big fall is Derek Chauvin.

My knowledge of history related to the subject of discussion is far greater than yours .. but that is irrelevant. What is relevant is that did not make a coherent claim - such that I have no idea what events in history you are referring to.

There are elements of the Left that have been trying to trigger a race war since the Charles Manson era.

Think not? Look what the former No. 2 in the DNC is up to.

Minn. AG Keith Ellison is preparing for show trials of the 4 MPD officers by charging 2nd deg Murder. Its a PR stunt because it requires proof of intent to kill. He's setting up a losing hand.

    He does not want convictions.

Convictions would not inflame racial strife.

Mob violence has occurred in every civilization since at least ancient Rome. Generally speaking either the riots were suppressed and the country moved on or the riots were not suppressed and those civilization entered a steep decline from which they sometimes did not recover.

Yes, I am aware of all that. (Except the part the British Navy played in helping Toussaint win. Thank you for that info). I love learning about history. :)

Of course. We don't want him to face "street justice" the way George Floyd and so many others have.

Don't get to happy the Brits didn't do it on purpose, they were blockading France. It's quite possible they didn't even notice about Toussaint's revolt. The sad thing is that Haiti has had better rulers since Toussaint.

Yes ... very true in many respects ! - see .. was that not so troublesome :) This is a key insight. The Roman Senators would orate at length about the need to keep the poor fed ... lest they get restless .. and control squalor - disease.

Blood in the Streets looks at the rise and fall. Technological innovation leads to military superiority which leads to economic hegemony.
Technology then spreads . and as it does the cost of projecting power increases.

One example given is the Brits - with the gatling gun they could take over an entire African nation with one gunship - fighting back with sticks and stones - as technology spreads .. that nation gets the gun. Now you have to send not one ship - but an entire Armada - and you will take many casualties. The cost of projecting power increases with time.

We saw this in the rise of the Barbarians in Roman times. They got better at fighting - their technology improved.. the costs increased - and Rome went down..

We are in similar times - the cost of projecting power has increased - to the point where the ROI - return on investment - is negative. At the same time - our economic hegemony has withered while wealth inequality has increased.

Then you have the cycle of debt/default - we are far down that road - I tell you true - it is not funny money -although these days it seems that way and kind of is for all intensive purposes - "at the moment" .. lose SOLE - reserve currency status - and things get ugly very quick.

Here is an interesting cycle - the last 3 world economic empires - Dutch, Spanish, British - all went into major decline roughly 25 years after going off Gold. Once you need nothing backing the currency - it becomes much easier for Gov'ts to create debt.

The Dollar went off Gold completely in 72. 28 years later - our decline ensued.. starting with the dot com crash 1999-2000. In constant dollars .. the Dow never increased in value for roughly 16 years. We finally started to increase again shortly after Trump was elected - This however was on the back of a massive deficit increase - a whole lot of credit card spending - and stocks fueled by share bybacks and crazy low interest rates in the bond markets.

So we beat the average by a few years - and now we are having are last gasp - a last crest of this massive wave- what R Prechter would refer to as a "Grand Supercycle" magnitude.

During such a time - social unrest is expected and was predicted - in Blood in the Streets and Reckoning ...(same authors) - and the reasons were as predicted. A property bubble is also one of the phases of the cycle of debt and default.

That is macro stuff - on a micro level we need to deal with the systemic issues that are setting people off - get our act together - stop fighting regime change wars - and focus on getting our economy through this mess.

One never knows. Most people think OJ Simpson was guilty of murder but he skated. We can only hope for the best.

OJ was as guilty as the desert sun is hot. He became a murderer, and that stain will never go away.

The USA and many other countries hated the idea of a Black controlled country in the Western hemisphere. They refused to trade with Haiti or have any kind of diplomatic interaction with them.
That is one of the reasons Haiti has remained so poor. The other reason is like you say: bad rulers and dictators.

And perhaps he should be. But the question is how much punishment is fair and just.

It certainly does not fall into the category of just a simple ordinary murder, in my view. There were some very huge mitigating factors, and what he did is not so entirely different from what normal police protocol would be in these sort of situations.

    I personally vehemently disagree.

    I was thinking 14 to 42 months.

Like I said, it wasn't a simple murder. He didn't have specific reason to believe death was the likely outcome. They were performing an arrest and the man was being unruly and fighting back.
They could probably tell he was high on drugs too, and that extra restraint techniques were needed.
