Winner: Google Phone/Android! (click for detailed results) Ranked Vote: Discussion Thread ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alright folks! Its finally time. Time to begin voting that is. But note, this particular vote is not the usual pick only one option Plurality vote we're used to. Instead, in this vote, you have the option to rank the choices in order of your preference. Scenario: Lets say that these phone companies are offering an awesome deal on phones. The catch is, the deals are only good if I buy the phones in bulk, and I have just enough money to buy a phone for all of us if I pick just one offer to go with. (<not really, but you get the idea ) So I basically want you guys to help me out by telling me which phone out of the bunch you like best, so that I can maximize our group's satisfaction. Since this is the first vote like this I'm setting up, I wanted to keep the list relatively limited for now. But more ranked votes are to come, and I may be asking for options. Also may be experimenting with other alternative voting methods. For this vote though, you can rank and order as many options as you'd like, or you can simply vote for the one option you prefer the most (if you want to be boring ). So without further ado, here are the options: What is the Best Smartphone?: A. Google Phone/Android B. Samsung Galaxy C. Apple iPhone D. BlackBerry and a special bonus option,E. LG Flip Phone To participate in this vote, simply list out the letters of the options in your order of preference. For example: If you really like Apple and Android phones, you'd post something like this, C, A, D, B, E Simple right? But if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask. And remember, you can rank how ever many options you'd like; all of them, some of them, or just one if you want. But keep in mind that there is no downside to ranking additional options. The additional rankings after your first pick will generally only matter if your first pick gets eliminated. On that note, I guess I should mention that I'll be using three different methods to tally up the results of this vote. Instant Runoff, Ranked Pairs, and I'll also be extrapolating a Plurality Vote winner for comparison. The vote will run from now to next Friday (4/20). One vote per person please. After the results have been tallied up, we can have a discussion on how folks feel about them. For additional information, feel free to take a read through the following if you haven't already: Case for Dumping Plurality and Using a Ranked System Solutions Oriented Approach to Restoring Meaningful Civil Discourse Last thing, is that in observance of today being Friday the 13th, please also checkout these sweet black cat Phone cases! And with that, let the voting commence! Winner: Google Phone/Android! (click for detailed results) -Meta
OK, guess I'll go first. Here's my vote: E, D, B I ranked E first because,...what can I say? I like practicality. Didn't rank A and C because I have limited experience with them, so left them out. I can't compare them against each other, and I don't know if they're any better than the phones I've used in the past. So, playin it safe y'know. That's the justification for my vote, but you guys can justify yours however you like. Or just post a vote with no justification of course. So don't be shy, feel free to have at it, no wrong answers here. -Meta
I'm out. I was so burned out on technology, AND I know about some of the newer built-in "features" these phones have that I made a point of sticking with an old flip-phone and it spends most of its time turned off and resting in my drawer. So I know nothing about preferences between newer phones. You could have done better methinks by making the test about favorite vegetables, or favorite tool manufacturer, or favorite city. Good luck with the vote test!
You should vote for the LG Flip Phone then. Option E. Sounds like you, like me, favor practicality over all the new fangled bells and whistles of modern smart phones. Nothing wrong with that imo. Yeah, those would make more sense now that you mention it, but hey this is only one vote in a whole list of planned votes. I can add your suggestions to the list for latter. This coming Monday there is one planned for favorite ice-cream flavor, and favorite pet to own after that to be kicked off next Friday. The list of planned votes is at the bottom of this post: http://www.politicalforum.com/index...sfunction-in-politics.529608/#post-1068884281 I should probably put the list in its own post somewhere though so that its easier to find and folks don't have to scroll to get to it... Thanks! -Meta
I use a mil-spec ruggedized "feature phone", which allows me to text, use a very high-quality speakerphone, take pictures, play music, Blutooth, etc. I have never wanted a "smart" phone.... I've got plenty of other computers of various kinds for all the other stuff.
I have no idea. My first smartphone was a iPhone 4. I own an Android tablet. The apps that I could get for the tablet were either available in both platforms were good. The Ios only apps were good. The Android only apps varied from good to horrible (yes, I know Android has more apps, but most of them are crap). I saw no need to change to an Android phone for that reason. I always buy iphones at least one model below the newest and greatest.
They work during power failures, not affected by sun spots or the Chi-Coms or Russians knocking out satellites, no batteries needing to be recharged and Google, Face Book, hackers can't listen and record what your saying or where you are at. And someone like me who has a old radio scanner can't listen to you conversation. And anyone who lives in Shaky Town knows, right after an earthquake...cell phones don't work for awhile, because everybody is calling somebody asking..."Did you feel it" ? Smart people always have at least one analog phone for a back up in case technology fails.
I have carried Android since its beginning, practically, and never owned an iPhone. I currently carry a Google Nexus 5x. I chose the Google phone because I wanted an unlocked phone on which every Android OS update would be immediately available to me. So, I am not qualified to objectively answer the poll question, because I have no experience with any of the other choices, and am biased towards the one I have. The next phone I buy will be an iPhone. I have come to the conclusion that google is evil, and that Apple is less so, with regards to my privacy.
Very helpful, thank you. My Blackberry is NOT a "smartphone" however. Not sure you meant to clarify this or not. When my Blackberry finally burns out then I will need to get one of the others. I will probably go with Google since I hate Apple and I hate Samsung even more.
Well, based on what you've written, it sounds like you prefer iPhones and Androids to other phones. And between those two, it sounds like you'd rather have an iPhone over an Android device. So if you had to put them down in order of preference, would I be safe in assuming your vote would be something like C, A? -Meta
Wow, I never realized there were so many 'old school' type folks on this site. I thought I'd be the only one. Figured the rest of you would all be tech enthusiasts or something. Lol!
I think there's a difference between being "techy" and subjecting yourself to a 24/7 invasion of privacy.
But if you had to pick from the list provided, how would you rank them? I'm guessing you'd be in the Flip Phone camp as well??
The only flip flops I ever owned I wore on my feet. But I'm more of a river sandal kind of guy. So I have never owned a flip open cell phone. I have a Samsung Android but it's turned off 95% of the time.
So if someone were to offer you a free phone from the list, which would you prefer? The 5% of the time you use the Samsung, does it get the job done? Would you be interested in trying out any of the others? And if so, which ones interest you more than the others??
I don't want any free stuff. I pay my own way. I'm old enough to remember when AK-47's were free for anyone who wanted one. But there was a Catch-22... you had to adopt and advocate socialism and hate the imperialist Yankees.
I would have to go with the Galaxy since it's the only one I'm familiar with. Otherwise I don't know which smartphone is the best. I'm not dependent on cell phones or even computers. I can function 100% without todays technology. A few years ago I left home and forgot to take my phone with me. I needed to make a phone call and HOLY CRAP, there are no longer any public pay phones anymore !!!
Yep, if there's one thing I've learned already, its that we aren't at all a bunch that's big on smart phone usage here at politicalforum. Lol!
Bias is perfectly acceptable in this particular vote. It isn't meant to be a strictly objective contest regarding the phones' technical merits or anything like that. Of course, you can base your rankings on that if you want, but you could also rank based solely on which phone's look and feel you find more appealing, or on simply which phones you've used and liked in the past if you want. You can be completely subjective with it, and I guess I should have specified that in the OP. O well, will keep that in mind for the next vote. Based on the sentiments you expressed though, would it be fair to say that your vote would be something like, C, A? Or has your experience with Google left you with such a negative opinion of their phones that you'd rank the other options above it? -Meta
