British Columbia voters have killed the Harmonized Sales Tax which will save families between $350 to $1,000 per year depending on income. The fact our provincial government thought they could win this referendum shows just how out of touch politicians are. They're living in caves to think that people support increased taxes.
I couldn't agree with you more. And did you notice how Christy Clark and the Liberals admitted defeat with a huge grudge? Did you notice how vindictive she was? She effectively issued veiled threats against the people of B.C. saying that she is going to cut services as a result and she again repeated the corporate boogie man mantra that jobs are going to disappear.
I remember that the government have promise to scrap the gst in fact Chrtien including Harper promise to scrap that tax instead what we are seeing is a hst combining both the pst and gst as one, so much for scraping the gst! The government have been saying over and over again that Canada needs more revenue or taxes if it is to keep up with its social programs, population have been growing with immigration the very reason why we have big influx of immigrants is to get taxes from these new working immigrants but what is happening is it seem to be straining Canada more this is what I don't understand????
It just goes to show that referenda don't work. People are too stupid for direct democracy. So, while you save a few bucks, your province is on the hook for $3 billion. Smart......
Its like Americas tax cuts. I want tax abolition I mean cut government while you do taxes. Make it law that when you reduce the tax rate you cant simply enact it again in the middle of the night when no one is watching. I know we should make it so we get a majority in the senate and house to do it. 2/3 or more. 80% of elected Representatives to raise taxes. Not sure about there , but why should you give them more revenue? Let them manage what they have. Now they will do it anyway!!!!LOOK Range of consumer items Some of the items that consumers can expect — in 18 months — to once again be PST-exempt include: New homes over $525,000. Real estate fees. Moving services. Home renovations and landscaping. Purchase or lease of a fuel efficient vehicle. Restaurant meals and snack foods. Domestic flights, coach bus, rail and taxi. Sporting events, movie tickets, gym memberships, concerts, camping sites Beauty salon services. (Good for you Jenn ) Over-the-counter medications. School supplies. Wedding expenses. Telephone and TV service. Critics of the PST point out that there may not be any real long-term savings under the PST system, because it will provide less government revenue and lead to an increased provincial deficit, which theoretically will have to be paid for eventually with tax dollars.
Bottom line is the HST is a good idea, supported by many economists. The problem is the BC Liberals mismanaged the whole marketing of the idea. They rammed it onto the people, right after an election where it wasn't in the platform, and also during a recession where peoples incomes were suffering. And now the people respond in an equally dumb way, with a knee-jerk reversal of the tax. It's actually a sound idea, and shouldn't be reversed.
HST is good for the corporation bad for the consumers this is what its all about the Liberals are starting to move towards supporting corporation rather than being in the middle. I voted yes to abolish because of the following: 1. HST = pst + gst so much for abolishing gst 2. government keeps on promising to lower taxes instead taxes always goes up either directly or through other forms such as carbon tax, property tax increase, parking tax, park tax etc. etc. 3. inspite of so many new taxes every year the government still claim to have no money to support our social and civil structure
