Travis Reinking Is What Happens When Black People Are ‘Criminals’ and White People Are Allowed to Be Invisible

A few months ago, during a conversation on Facebook about one of the many mass shootings committed by a white man (I forget which one), the homie Sai Grundy wrote that (paraphrasing) one of the byproducts of the criminalization of blackness is that white people are often able to elude suspicion by virtue of their whiteness. While we capture all of the attention, they sneak on by.

The most prominent recent example of this I can think of is Stephen Paddock, the (white) man who killed 58 people in Las Vegas. Imagine how invisible to everyone you must be—and how aware of your invisibility you must be—to somehow be able to collect 23 rifles in a hotel room in one of the busiest and most densely populated places in the world. He amassed a freakin’ arsenal and was able to do so without anyone stopping to ask him a question or inspect his room.

Anyway, the more we learn about Travis Reinking—the man who allegedly mowed down four people at a Tennessee Waffle House—the harder it is to imagine any of this happening if he had happened to be black.

Reinking, who was taken into custody Monday afternoon, told a Secret Service officer at the northeast entrance [of the White House] that he was a “sovereign citizen” who had a “right to inspect the grounds,” according to a Metropolitan Police Department incident report dated July 7, 2017.

Imagine a black person rolling up to the *********king Secret Service and demanding to inspect the *********king White House.

Most recently, police said, he visited a car dealership in the Nashville [Tenn.] suburb of Brentwood last week and somehow obtained a key fob for a BMW without providing identification. Reinking stole the car and police gave up their pursuit because it was rush hour, said Don Aaron, spokesman for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.

Imagine a black person being trusted enough to get a key fob for a luxury car without providing any ID. Also imagine the police just saying, “Eh. There’s some traffic, so **** it” if this were a black car thief.

“Travis is hostile toward police and does not recognize police authority. Travis also possesses several firearms,” an officer said in a May 2016 incident report.

Imagine this being said by a black person and that black person remaining free and unshot.​

For those on this forum who continue to deny what White Privilege is all about, here is your case example.

"Our people" is a large group, and depending on your skin color, you can be treated as badly as blacks.

Even though I am Latino, I come off as white. Russians think I'm Russian, Armenians, think I'm Armenian, and Mexicans think I'm a Gringo until I talk to them in Spanish. I don't hide my Latino origins, but we live in a world of first impressions and biases.

If you as a Latino, cannot understand that, then maybe you're just wanting to be more white than Latino. I can understand that. When I was younger, I wanted to blend in more with white Americans than my own culture. That's a common theme among first generation immigrants. Don't know if that is your case too. Either way, it sounds to me based on everything you post, you're wanting to be something else than who you are.

 

And everytime something happens to a black person, the black racists jump up and claim racism. He gets fired, turned down for something, gets criticized.... it's all because the person is black.

Hogwash. The nation has bent over backwards to lift black people and other minorities up. Regardless of that, when people refuse to stand on their own feet and accept responsibility for who they are, no matter what their color- they don't deserve respect and they don't deserve special accommodation. And the trash that promotes the "white privilege" crap are being even more racist than America was 100 years ago- they include everybody based on race alone, regardless of all other factors.

That IS virtually the ultimate definition of racism

 

I don't want to share a system of government with the OP, and no white person in their right mind does.

...and that's why white nationalism is growing.

It's asking the very simple question. If Reinking were black, would he have slipped through so many levels of common sense checkpoints?

 

Interesting, since the OP does not talk about any "system of government".

 

I know very well what systems of government come from the idea of fighting against "privileged classes" by increasing state power. Stalin and Mao have shown that to us more than enough in the last century.

I did not read the article- but, one case does not make a national pattern or policy. My point is that black privilege IS a fact. I've seen incredible abuse by blacks allowed to slide when whites would have been hammered- sometime because of the officials sympathy, sometimes from fear of being accused of racism. This is not a one sided situation that has not been addressed- it is a work making progress, and turning it into backlash racism doesn't help anything- actually it makes it worse.

Act respectably, be treated respectably. That won't happen consistently so long as people call each other racists like it was a damn game.

Okay, a response from an older moderate Democrat. I have worked comfortably with all races, ethnic groups and genders. I consider myself rational and non-prejudiced. However, if I am walking toward someone on an empty sidewalk, I am more comfortable if they are white and not black. I suspect that a black person is not very comfortable toward a policeman either.

I wish that I were truly non-prejudicial. But, I am not, and it is something that I have to deal with. Our children need to grow up in mixed, inter-racial conditions so that they can appreciate the humanity and quality of everyone. That is the only way that our nation can come together and grow.

 

Yeah, I wonder why so many White Christians have turned to that tactic.

 

That's it! We need to become aware of our own internal biases. They are inherent biological traits. No one is arguing against that, but acting based on these biases is what we need to guard against. Until we recognize our own thought patterns, both the conscious and unconscious ones, we cannot adequately address the issue of racism.

 

High level nonsense. 1st it is quite routine for police to call off high speed pursuits when the danger of such out weighs the benefit to society of continuing the pursuit. Especially for things like grand theft auto or shoplifting. The race has nothing to do with whether pursuit is called off or not merely the likelihood of injury to civilians.
As for your other contention had Reinking been black and showed up on the Obama Whitehouse lawn claiming to be member of BLM they'd have invited him for lunch and arranged a TV spot for him to air his greibances real or imagined.

 

Pure projection on your part. We're not victims. We have enemies who declared themselves as such by their actions, we identify them for what they are, and we're kicking their ass.
