Rep. Mikie Sherrill, during a live webcast Tuesday evening, said she witnessed some members of Congress leading people through the Capitol on Jan. 5 in what she termed a "reconnaissance for the next day," when insurrectionists took part in a deadly siege on the legislative branch.

“We can’t have a democracy if members of Congress are actively helping the president overturn the elections results.

And so not only do I intend to see that the president is removed and never runs for office again and doesn’t have access to classified material, I also intend to see that those members of Congress who abetted him; those members of Congress who had groups coming through the Capitol that I saw on Jan. 5 — a reconnaissance for the next day; those members of Congress that incited this violent crowd; those members of Congress that attempted to help our president undermine our democracy; I'm going to see they are held accountable, and if necessary, ensure that they don't serve in Congress.”

After impeachment, this should be the biggest story of the day.... That's a very explosive claim and she'd better be able to back that up somehow or fully apologize and walk it back. I gather there have to be videos or signup sheets or some evidence of this? Surely Congresspeople cannot bring people to that particular workplace without some sort of check-in process?

Also, why were they even allowing "tours" of the Capitol the day before an event that was sure to a major divisive event, even before the Trump Riot??

It's been reported a lot of people seemed to know where they wanted to go in what is supposed to be one of the most confusing buildings in the country...

Anybody thinks she can back this claim up? What should be the appropriate punishment for anybody in Congress who participated in these 'tours', if intent is proven?

    The boot?

I'm following this one, along with Rudy's attempted call to Tuberville on jan 6.

Obviously, if any of this can actually proven, any member implicated would have to be expelled (and never again allowed to seek Federal Office).

I believe there have not been any Capitol tours allowed since covid - so can't imagine why these tours, led by leaders of the Republican party, were permitted. And shouldn't be difficult to prove with all the security cameras in the building.

Yeah... don't hold your breath. These political hacks know exactly what they are doing. Once you put it out there, it doesn't matter if it is true or not. This nonsense.... Stop the steal... Its all the same thing. Both respective bases eat it up without any proof.

I don't even care anymore which side does it, but I keep hoping at least one side will rise above this kind of petty nonsense.

Didn't even think of that angle, although I'm sure there are exceptions for members to allow small personal groups in, especially for the newer members...

Whatever the outcome of these allegations, I have to imagine they'll consider disallowing all Capitol "tours" between the election and the inauguration going forward. New members of Congress can run their family, friends, and potential rioters though in Feb...

A Congresswoman says she witnessed it, so I will give her the BOTD for now. This isn't Louis Gohmert or Paul Gosar.... this is somebody generally respected in Congress...

But she'll need to back it up sooner or later, and as has been said, that shouldn't be super difficult to do, unless Capitol security is even more screwed up than we know...

And if true, this will be the complete opposite of petty nonsense...

Accusing a sitting congress person of aiding in insurrection is serious. Even if some of the insurrectionists were given guided tours on 1-5, that still is not proof anyone in congress was part of some wild conspiracy to overthrow the government. That is a huge leap.

She served in the U.S. Navy and was one of the first women pilots allowed in combat. She then transferred to Naval Intelligence. After leaving the Navy, she obtained a law degree and served as a U.S. Attorney before being elected to Congress. I'd say the chances of her being more than "a political hack" are pretty good.

No, but it's step 1 in requiring a very serious investigation...

It's a leap from there... not a huge one, based on what a lot of the newer GOP Congresspeople have already said and done...

And? That didn't stop her from making a completely baseless claim.

It is IMO a huge leap to accuse sitting congress members of aiding in insurrection.

    Following along.

It was way too easy, and they knew how to get to some very secret locations, very quickly.

They had help; that much is obvious.

Now we just need to know who helped.

That's not as big as the leap from finding that the president of the USA is guilty of insurrection.

And, to think that all that can happen, it seems so far, is to impeach him!

How do you know it was a baseless claim? And, I forgot to cite her graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy and retirement from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. Plus her work as a prosecutor as a U.S. Attorney. I don't think she made public any particular names, but I suspect they'll be easy to find...since Republicans don't seem to wear masks.

There are multiple reports from congressmen stating that the panic buttons in Aynna Pressley's office were torn out prior to the insurgency of Jan 6.

This is more direct evidence that this assault on our democracy received support from the inside.

Regardless of the size of the leap, I'm a little surprised this isn't getting more airplay and buzz... it's a big story, either way...

Since any tours given by Congress or staff would be by invitation only, I don’t imagine it will be too hard to connect anyone who took part in both a tour and and insurrection. And connect them to the relevant member of Congress.

I have not been in the building since before 9/11. However, since then an entire Capitol Hill Visitor’s center has been built. Tourists don’t even enter through the main building anymore.

And even when they do, the only part of the building they actually get to see are the visitor’s galleries of the Senate and House,, Statuary Hall and the Rotunda (which used to be where you entered the building). Tourists are no longer shown where the offices are, or allowed to ride the subway between the House and Senate buildings as we once were.

I call total BS and flame baiting by the left! More flame baiting by the left. They will never stop until the American people stop them at the polls. We can hope 2022 brings them all to their senses with recognition as to how dangerous the Democrats are to this nation!

Why would you say that? There are plenty of reasons to think the exact opposite.

In any event, anyone who was invited on a tour by a sitting Congressman or Senator, who subsequently turned up at the insurrection will get to tell their story to the FBI.

Call whatever you want. But the first people who participated in the insurrection that attended a tour led by a Congresman days before may have a different story to tell.

And it might be a fair amount of time before regular tours are allowed again after 1/6....

Thinking harder on it, it might have been better for this Congress lady to connect a few of the dots you mention before coming forward...

Maybe she did... Coming out may make those responsible nervous and try to evade thus helping the law get to them.
