After years of Republican demands that any increase in the federal government’s borrowing limit be paired with corresponding spending cuts, leaders in Congress appear to lack the votes to pass those cuts, even with total GOP control in Washington.

Oh no! Now how are they going to cut spending and control our deficit??? We need cuts to get spending in the budget under control.

Now they are going to have to turn to Democrats to raise the debt ceiling and that means ballooning the deficit.

Why do we even have a conservative Congress???

There will be cuts but, not to the budget as a whole. Trump is talking "infrastructure" and "rebuilding the military". On the campaign trail he was talking "take care of veterans". He wants to ramp up the war on drugs and increase police spending.

No way he can come up with the cuts to balance out the increase in spending required to compensate for the proposed spending increases.

Yes there should definitely be cuts in the budget, but I think we should cut quite a few military bases as well which is blasphemy to a lot of people. Military programs, weapons systems and personnel should be the same if not increased at many areas, but we have plenty of redundant bases around the world and I think it would be a huge savings to look at which bases may fit this 'box'.

The biggest issue now is once again, the rhetoric being used.

If you say we should make cuts to aid policies, you hear from the Left "But millions of people will die!!!!"

If you say we should make cuts to military policies, you hear from the Right "But millions of people will die!"

Un freaking real how over dramatized we are in our effort to prove our victimization right?

Feds Collect Record Taxes Through August; Still Run $673.7B Deficit
September 13, 2017 | The federal government collected record total tax revenues through the first eleven months of fiscal 2017 (Oct. 1, 2016 through the end of August), according to the Monthly Treasury Statement.

Through August, the federal government collected approximately $2,966,172,000,000 in total tax revenues. That was $8,450,680,000 more (in constant 2017 dollars) than the previous record of $2,957,721,320,000 in total tax revenues (in 2017 dollars) that the federal government collected in the first eleven months of fiscal 2016. At the same time that the federal government was collecting a record $2,966,172,000,000 in tax revenues, it was spending $3,639,882,000,000—and, thus, running a deficit of $673,711,000,000.

Individual income taxes have provided the largest share (47.9 percent) of federal revenues so far this fiscal year. From Oct. 1 through the end of August, the Treasury collected $1,421,997,000,000 in individual income taxes. Payroll taxes provided the second largest share (35.9 percent), with the Treasury collecting $1,065,751,000,000 in these taxes.

The $233,631 in corporate income taxes collected in the first eleven months of fiscal 2017 equaled only 8.6 percent of total tax collections. The $21,172,000,000 collected in estate and gift taxes equaled only 0.71 percent of total taxes collected this fiscal year. (Tax revenues were adjusted to constant 2017 using the Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation calculator.)

Congress Reaches Sticky Points in $1.3 Trillion Spending Bill Talks
March 17, 2018 | WASHINGTON — Top-level congressional talks on a $1.3 trillion catchall spending bill are reaching a critical stage as negotiators confront immigration, abortion-related issues and a battle over a massive rail project that pits President Donald Trump against his most powerful Democratic adversary.

The bipartisan measure is loaded with political and policy victories for both sides. Republicans and Trump are winning a long-sought budget increase for the Pentagon while Democrats obtain funding for infrastructure, the opioid crisis and a wide swath of domestic programs. The bill would implement last month’s big budget agreement, providing 10 percent increases for both the Pentagon and domestic agencies when compared with current levels. Coupled with last year’s tax cut measure, it heralds the return of trillion-dollar budget deficits as soon as the budget year starting in October.

Sorting out 'riders'

While most of the funding issues in the enormous measure have been sorted out, fights involving a number of policy “riders” — so named because they catch a ride on a difficult-to-stop spending bill — continued into the weekend. Among them are GOP-led efforts to add a plan to revive federal subsidies to help the poor cover out-of-pocket costs under President Barack Obama’s health law and to fix a glitch in the recent tax bill that subsidizes grain sales to cooperatives at the expense of for-profit grain companies. Trump has privately hreatened to veto the whole package if a $900 million payment is made on the Hudson River Gateway Project, a priority of top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer of New York. Trump’s opposition is alarming northeastern Republicans such as Gateway supporter Peter King, R-N.Y., who lobbied Trump on the project at a St. Patrick’s luncheon in the Capitol on Thursday.

The Gateway Project would add an $11 billion rail tunnel under the Hudson River to complement deteriorating, century-old tunnels that are at risk of closing in a few years. It enjoys bipartisan support among key Appropriations panel negotiators on the omnibus measure who want to get the expensive project on track while their coffers are flush with money. Most House Republicans voted to kill the funding in a tally last year, however, preferring to see the money spread to a greater number of districts. “Obviously, if we’re doing a huge earmark ... it’s troubling,” said Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., a leader of House conservatives. “Why would we do that? Schumer’s pet project and we pass that under a Republican-controlled Senate, House and White House?” Schumer has kept a low profile, avoiding stoking a battle with the unpredictable Trump.

Border wall

There’s also a continuing battle over Trump’s long-promised U.S.-Mexico border wall. While Trump traveled to California on Tuesday to inspect prototypes for the wall, what’s pending now is $1.6 billion for earlier designs involving sections in Texas that double as levees and 14 miles (23 kilometers) of replacement fencing in San Diego. It appears Democrats may be willing to accept wall funding, but they are battling hard against Trump’s demands for big increases for immigration agents and detention beds they fear would enable wide-scale roundups of immigrants illegally living in the U.S. Meanwhile, a White House trial balloon to trade additional years of wall funding for a temporary reprieve for immigrants brought to the country illegally as children — commonly called “Dreamers” — landed with a thud last week.
