Republicans should oppose Trump's power grab!!!!

Republicans, be warned.

What Trump wants to do to build his wall, will come back to haunt you in a BIG way, if you let it happen.

Trump wants to take seized drug money, and military money, and other money and use it for a purpose that has been SPECIFICALLY rejected by Congress.

Congress has rejected a wall, paid for by the taxpayers. Even when the Republicans controlled both houses, they still rejected a wall.

The job of of the President is to execute the will of Congress, and the spending approved by Congress. Its what the Constitution says, its what our Founding Fathers wanted.

Instead, Trump wants to use Congressionally approved money for a purpose specifically rejected by Congress.

Now, you may approve of the wall. You even may approve of what Trump wants to do with his emergency powers, but think about this.

If Trump does this, and the Supreme Court says "ok", than Pandora's Box is wide open!!!

Next time there is a Democrat President, he can decide there is a national healthcare emergency and take $100 billion from the military and use it to pay for Medicare for all folks age 40 and up. Or he could take $50 billion from the military and use it to pay for all college students tuition, after declaring a "education debt emergency".

Is this the kind of power you want to give Democrat Presidents? Cause thats exactly what will happen if Congress allows this and the Supreme Court approves it.

Any Democrat President can declare ANY sort of emergency he likes, and take as much money he wants from any unrelated program to spend on anything he wants, even if the idea has been clearly rejected by Congress.

You really want that? God I hope not.

cause if you guys let this happen, then you'll have to accept it when a Democrat does the same thing.

Well Democrats control Congress. If they think this is a power grab they can repeal the National Emergencies Act, which gave Trump this power in the first place. Let's see them propose some legislation.

I think every Democrat candidate should be asked if they would declare a national emergency for health care gun control or global warming and what their declaration would entail.

If I’m a democrat hell no im not repealing the act I’m hoping it makes it’s way successfully through court. Downside he gets his wall, upside this can be used to do things they want plus anything that grows the gubmint is good.

This is really, to me, the crux of the situation:

We can go round and round about pandora's box, but we should stay focused on the here and now. Is anyone okay with a POTUS who uses congressionally approved money for a purpose rejected by both Dems and Reps?

 

The problem with your rant is that Congress just passed funding a wall so they have a weak argument that they don't want a wall. Also, the Administration has about $5 billion in spending before it ever gets to the funding from the National Emergency.

Problem for Congress is that they gave these powers to the President and they also gave themselves an out so there is little for the courts to address.

It would be interesting if Trump used confiscated drug money to secure the border. I would love to see the alt-lefties complain about that source of money put to good use.

It actually can't. Despite Pelosi's threat of using it to ban guns or institute the Green Dream, the act allows money to be moved around, not overturning statutory law or the constitution.
