I like Jesus largely because he was a militant hippie who told people to drop out of society and pursue God. Merely spending time with criminals treating them as people makes you more like christ than the average "christian". I don't think the tenets of authoritarianism, homophobia, patriarchy, and capitalism are compatible with following a man who rejected all of the authorities, religious and legal, of his time in favor of chasing the moneychangers out of the temple and encouraging the downtrodden to stick together and support one another.

A few thousand white nationalists among 330 million americans is nothing, a drop in the bucket does not begin to describe how miniscule the number is, it's like 1 person per 100,000 or so. How many black nationalists do you think are there in the US? How many Hispanic nationalists?

I was discussing the fact that the whole idea that the common man can or even should have anything to do with what happens to him is something really very new in history, at least as far as being so widespread and successful. It's been tried before, particularly in Periclean Greece, but it didn't last much more than 50 years. It was seen as a curiosity, something which would be nice if it worked but was never really practicable

 

Face it if it wasn't for largely European White Men with the drive to literally expand their empires and step on those not like them the world we see today wouldn't have happened.

 

What I am trying to say is that our Democratic way of life is, on the scale of history, an outlier, an aberration and it is very definitely NOT something we should take for granted.

Before America most of the large countries in the world were monarchies. Some evolved to become Parliamentary over time, like Britain, but most, like France, were ruled pretty much absolutely by their Royal families. There was a handful of Republics but not enough to be significant. This goes back pretty much forever, does anyone dispute that?

Nowadays we have very few countries that are absolute monarchies, like Saudi Arabia. Most all the Monarchies left are "Constitutional" which means their Kings and nobility are figureheads, and their real governments are democratic. Even the dictatorships pay homage to the idea, calling themselves. "People's Republics". Democracy is triumphant

And just for that reason we must not let ourselves become blinded to the fact that Democracy is a new and still fledgling concept in the world. We have already seen two pretenders try to usurp and overthrow the Rule of the People in world history. One based on class and the other on race. The one based on class collapsed of its own weight only recently, the other was based on race and while defeated militarily in 1945, shows disturbing signs of a resurgence. It is this resurgence that I find a most distressing development in both US and World politics
