So a $1.6 trillion vote buying scheme. No explaination as to those who PAID for their college by working and saving for themselves or their children. No more excelling in order to achieve scholastic scholarships or athletic scholarships. We pay for it out of our retirement accounts and other investments. We like people who did not go to college now paying for those who do AND THEN MAKE MORE MONEY.

Hey Bernie what about my mortgage just think how better would be the economy if I didn't have to pay that and could spend on other things. You know one of your rationales for me paying off other peoples debt. Why do you propose paying off everyone's mortgage too, a roof over my head is more important than a college degree.

"Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., will propose on Monday eliminating all $1.6 trillion of student debt held in the United States, a significant escalation of the policy fight in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary two days before the candidates' first debate in Miami.

Sanders is proposing that the federal government pay to wipe clean the student debt held by 45 million Americans - including all private and graduate school debt - as part of a package that also would make public universities, community colleges and trade schools tuition-free.

Sanders is proposing to pay for these plans with a tax on Wall Street his campaign says will raise more than $2 trillion over 10 years, though some tax experts give lower revenue estimates.........."

Classic. Make all of those of us who invested in the banks that wrote these loans take the hit. Sanders is the classic Bolchevik...

Oh my, I paid my way through college and so I don't have debt. And who is being more fiscally responsible? Someone who pays for their way through college, or someone who gets an expensive college degree through student loans and gets their debt erased by the likes of Bernie Sanders???

While I disagree that prior debts should be erased we do need to address the cost of college nationwide. Many states are moving toward making community college ‘free’ for residents which would make a dent in the cost burden.

You can't address college cost by increasing the government money flowing to colleges or making it "free" to the student but expensive to who is actually paying the college, the government in Bernies case.

Hey I am all for a Congressional select committee to investigate the cost of college tuitions, where the money's going, how successful are they in providing the student what the student is paying for. What are college instructors and administrators are actually doing to earn their pay. What has happened to the administrator to student ratio and why. A top to bottom review.

I dropped out as a sophomore but my parents paid freshman year, I paid sophomore and some of that was night classes after work.

There is a better way to do this......
Five hundred dollars per month for all three hundred and thirty million Americans paid for by an experiment similar to the President Lincoln Greenback model...... or the JFK attempt to duplicate what Lincoln did?

Shouldn't everyone else who didn't make the incredibly stupid decision of going tens of thousands of dollars in debt for a worthless degree get something too?

Has anyone addressed why colleges are charging so much?

Nevermind, I know why. Government guaranteed loans handed out like candy to idiots.

So we're handing money back to ourselves?

Except for the people who go "Ewww" when someone suggests getting a job, of course.

Very few Canadians would stop working if they received a Social Credit Income Supplement of five hundred dollars per month. I am advocating sending this to all thirty seven point six million Canadians in a manner that I was told was somewhat like an idea proposed by Milton Friedman who felt that it could eventually be used to eliminate the welfare bureaucracy.

Considering college is going to be free for everyone that wants it, it's going to be a lot more than just 1.6T. I would guess at least 3x that much in the first decade alone.

And he has said nothing about how he will control tuition fees, who decides how much will be paid at each and every school. Will Harvard now cost as much as Pleasant Valley Community College? Of that's right it's not going to cost anything it's going to be free!!!!

Slowing economic growth will cover it? And who are you ultimately taking that money from, every looked at your 401k holdings?

Tell me Fresh what about all those hard working students who attended college and worked and paid for their college education? What's Bernie's or Warren's plan? What about all the savings by parents who helped pay for their children. How do you recompense them? Or do you just say screw you, you were just stupid not to take out all those loans.

A roof over my head is more important than a college degree, how about paying for my mortgage, just think how much I would help the economy spending that money new TV's and guitars, think how many people that would employ.

    Isn't that the socialist logic?

But those who aren't working sure have less incentive to do so.

Perhaps........ but if all of their neighbours had an extra five hundred dollars per month then the poor who are at least willing to do odd jobs....... would have more work in front of them than they perhaps could handle?

I love the idea of Calgary Dollars.... but it is hard for them to compete with Canadians dollars...

    https://www.calgarydollars.ca/

I love the idea of the Ithaca Hour notes but.....
it is hard for them to compete with good old USA bills....

yes sadly trumps tax cuts did little to expand the economy, but taking them away will hurt companies that is why we said not to give them in the fist place, but they will only hurt one year, same as they only helped one year

we've had those for decades, but 'dumbasses' wouldn't enroll due to the 'enigma' of being in a 'community' college rather than an 'elite' university... peeps did it to themselves out of vanity... peeps need to to understand and promote practicality, which is smarter ;)

All that the government would have to do is say they will no longer issue or back loans to conventional colleges for core classes. After you complete core classes at a community college you can transfer to a traditional one with student loans and grants as regular.

Tuitions will skyrocket. Students will agree to any loan once they can believe that one day they will win the Bernie Sanders College Lottery as well.
