What on earth did Adam Lanz have to do with homeschooling?

    http://dailycaller.com/2014/09/26/s...alls-for-government-crackdown-on-homeschools/

    quote:
“Under a new law proposed this week by Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy’s Sandy Hook Advisory Commission, every homeschooling parent with a child who has been labeled with a behavioral or emotional problem would be forced to submit to a host of strict, burdensome regulations.”

“Administrators could pull the plug on any parents’ homeschooling by declaring that the child failed to make “adequate progress.”

    Taxcutter says:
Of course you know that practically all homeschooled children will be deemed by unionized government-paid bureaucrats to not be making “adequate progress” and put back into unionized government-run indoctrination centers.

    Quote:
“The onerous new rules for homeschooling families somehow make sense in the minds of commission members because Adam Lanza massacred 20 young children and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. in December 2012 — when he was 20 years old.

Lanza attended public schools (and a Catholic school) for virtually all of his education.”

    Taxcutter asks:
Are people in Connecticut (mostly Democrats) dumb enough to buy this? This nothing more than the unionized government-run K-12 education monopoly striking back at its competition.

We the people need to strip government of power, not arrogate more to it.

What they're really saying is home schooled children are more difficult to monitor, and that all kids need to be monitored. It's a police state mentality. Stupid and scared is a terrible combination.

There should be reasonable regulations in place to monitor home schooled students to insure that none are being abused, are receiving a reasonable education, and are receiving reasonable medical care if they are known to have had problems. Unfortunately, too many states, particularly those run by serious right wingers, give home schoolers a free pass.

BS, no homeschoolers are given a free pass in any state. And using your asinine argument about "reasonable" regulations is a joke, too. Try again.

Can you elaborate on the "free pass"?

Is this based on personal experience?

This type of abusive policy targeting homeschools isn't new and it'll continue to be more and more restrictive as more people decide to keep their children out of public schools. Public schools aren't winning the PR battle, and for good reason, they're generally mediocre at best despite the zillions of dollars they seem to receive for "promising" to reform education. It's a joke. Because it's not "education" that needs reform, it's the public education system that needs reform. Unions have far too much control over the system and so do federal bureaucrats who control the purse strings and in large part determine the policies & curriculum. It's a mess, but a mess no one wants to admit is a mess or really clean up because of the money and politics involved. But sadly, the machine is in place and it's not going to change anytime soon.

of course money is a big motivator. Reduce the number of kids in public schools, and the schools will see a drop in government funding

homeschoolers tend to do a lot better in the job market. This is merely an attempt to enforce the "No Child Left Behind" rule

Education unions cannot allow home schooling to become commonplace.

... and on the other hand, inner city Chicago schools are the safest place in the world right? Are the metal detectors tested often enough? Maybe the frequency of public school teachers accused of child abuse needs to be addressed? No drugs being sold/passed? Are Michelle's lunches providing enough nutrition for our children? Are bullies being managed/punished for abusing other students?

Just do this require every home schooled child pass the same tests and do the same classwork as they would do in a public school unless they are in a brick and mortar accredited private school, until the child gets a GED at age sixteen OR meets the High School graduation level of work. If a child fails the standardized test the child must go to public school or an aforementioned private school.

They can exceed the requirements and add to them but the classwork and content must at least match the public school.

    That is fair.

What's "fair" is making sure a child receives an education, and based on test scores the public schools in large part aren't really meeting that bar. But whatever, we've allowed big brother to define education, so I guess whatever they say is "education", is, right?

That is fair. But remember the whole reason for the entire evolution is to pass a body of knowledge to the next generation, so homeschooled kids should pass standardized tests for each milestone (grade or form). If they fail, into the public school with them. If they pass the parents get a check for the statewide per-pupil cost. In Indiana, it's roughly $9,000 per pupil per academic year. My money is on the home schoolers.

Elkhart County, Indiana is a stronghold of homeschooling. There they formed a co-op to handle the extracurricular needs of the home schoolers. They are fielding football and basketball teams recognized by the IHSAA.

There are parochial and private schools in most areas, parents can go to those to send a child to school I have no issues with that. And I did note parents can exceed the state requirements if the system is as good as is said children should have no issues surpassing grade levels in all subjects.
