Women, who hitherto faced detention for defying ban, will be able to drive from next summer but will not be able to obtain licenses immediately; opponents argued lifting ban it would corrupt society and lead to sin; US hails change as 'step in right direction.'
Saudi Arabia on Tuesday announced that women will be allowed to drive for the first time in the ultra-conservative kingdom next summer, fulfilling a key demand of women's rights activists who faced detention for defying the ban.
The kingdom was the only the country in the world to ban women from driving and for years had garnered negative publicity internationally for detaining women who defied the ban.
The move, which has been welcomed by the United States, represents a significant opening for women in Saudi Arabia, where women's rights have steadily and slowly gained ground over the years. Saudi women remain largely under the whim of male relatives due to guardianship laws.King Salman and his young son and heir, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, have tested the waters though, allowing women into the country's main stadium in the capital, Riyadh, for national day celebrations this month. The stadium had previously been reserved for all-male crowds to watch sporting events. The king and his son have also opened the country to more entertainment and fun.

Are they free to drive without any restrictions? Do they have to have a male with them? Can they crank up some Big band and Swing and head out to the local pub for a cold one or just go to a ladies only event and be home before 1300.

Even though this law has passed many women will not go against the husband or families wishes. A token gesture.

Still cant believe that KSA is on the UN women's rights commission.

Great, just when I thought there was one country left in the world where I could go and not deal with women drivers. Dam!

So you are calling Arab woe
Most Saudi women want this and so do their husbands. The law takes effect next June. Many Saudi women have international driver's licenses or have already learned to drive out in the desert.

I guess they realize they don't have to be so barbaric since they have already conquored western civilization through western leaders deals the Saudi's to invade the west with islamic immigrants.
Between infidel sword dances and laying hands on crystal globes there seems we did the bowing to islam to seal a deal too.

If I lived there, opening as many auto body shops as I could afford would be my retirement plan.

Nope ... Saudi men under 50 want their wives to be able to shop and take the kids to school and they don't want to pay a foreign driver $500 a month to drive them.

The country also wants them to go to work to boost the economy, and driving is how they will get there. NPR said so today.

They 'learned to drive out in the desert' has such a sad ring about it, just like those Muslim women in "Beneath The Veil" in Afghanistan who had to sneak into a safe place for a short while.to wear lipstick or paint their fingernails.

Why weren't they allowed to drive legally, as a collective whole? Who would be so barbaric that women couldn't legally drive anywhere they want?

Because there were no roads, rest stops, traffic cops, roadside assistance for 40 years.

You didn't answer my question. Why would one gender not fully be allowed to drive and another could? Who would be so barbaric as to ban a gender from operating a motor vehicle?

I don't understand why this question is so difficult for you to answer honestly.

Because there were very few roads or cars in Arabia.. and when a car went across the desert they had sand tires, 5 gallons of water and traveled in twos or threes. Saudi men began to drive and there was a slow expansion of infrastructure, namely half way stations.. It just evolved without any infrastructure for women drivers.
