Scientists just sent a message to a possible alien civilization, and it could have disastrous conseq

Well...we've got over 13 billion years and 100's of billions of potential planets, with some percentage of these to be similar to Earth capable of life as we know it, so even .01% of this might have intelligent life...which equals 50-80 million possibilities...then there is the crap shoot of hooking up at similar technological moments in time. And all of this assumes none of them are severely hampered by having Republicans and Democrats...

 

We might not even know what the response might look like...

 

There are a couple of 'we's' I suppose; One 'we' is humans living today and another 'we' is mankind. Regarding mankind, even if we don't annihilate ourselves from our own stupidity, over-population of Earth and it's consequences will do us in. How long this will take cannot be known but we seem to have the potential to allow it to happen in the next few weeks to the next couple hundred years. Hawking says 600 years but I'll bet it will be something less than half this time...like 200-300 years tops. We can also guess that other alien life will experience these same scenarios but we don't know how or if they can manage the issues to remain sustainable? If other worlds get to the point in time where they must relocate some of their population to other planets, and if they have a million more years of technology to do this, we might assume that many of them are mobile. But not at the SOL since some of them would have made it here by now...

 

What makes you think they haven't?

If anyone has stopped by for a looksy we would not even know. They sure as hell aren't driving around at night with the brights on.

 

Significant, recurring and various "messages" have already been sent in the exact direction of GJ273, since the early 20th century, via radio, television, microwave and other signals, all capable of detection by sufficiently advanced inhabitants.

Depends on who you talk to. There are hundreds if not thousands instances of someone driving around in the skies with their headlights on witnessed by the military, pilots, policemen, and others from all walks of life. If it isn't ours in the skies so that only leaves a couple options for who the ufos belong to. ETs or some kind of another dimension entity. They seem to be going about their business of just observing us, watching us. We are probably to them, what a chimp is to a human. Far below them in intelligence and technology. They know they could not deal with a primitive species such as ourselves, and so they just watch us. And they have been watching us for thousands of years, and it is more than one species involved. At least this is what is believed in some ufo groups who take this stuff seriously.

These beings were the gods of old, imagine the greek gods. Now imagine these ETs appearing to primitive greeks, creating what we think is a myth, as greek mythology.

So no need to send out signals, for they have already found us, long ago.

If they have and we don't know then who cares?

 

Or if there is life it might not be advanced, Neanderthals were very successful as a species but possibly wouldn't have evolved further or what if the species focused on other things and didn't bother with technology that was too advanced they might have worked on medical care, agriculture and art and communication could be limited to the telegraph if they use such technology at all. Or the species in domination there could be akin to sharks they are amazingly successful and largely stupid a creature of instincts and wired for feeding and swimming and mating. In those cases we are likely pretty safe.
