Why People of Color Need Spaces Without White People

People of color need their own spaces. Black people need their own spaces. We need places in which we can gather and be free from the mainstream stereotypes and marginalization that permeate every other societal space we occupy. We need spaces where we can be our authentic selves without white people’s judgment and insecurity muzzling that expression. We need spaces where we can simply be—where we can get off the treadmill of making white people comfortable and finally realize just how tired we are.

Valuing and protecting spaces for people of color (PoC) is not just a kind thing that white people can do to help us feel better; supporting these spaces is crucial to the resistance of oppression. When people of color are together, there can be healing. We can reclaim parts of ourselves that have been repressed. We can redefine ourselves and support one another in embracing who we are. The necessity of these spaces is obvious to me as a woman of color learning to embrace layers of my own identity by being in community with other Black and brown bodies.

So in other words, segregation now, segregation tomorrow, and segregation forever. Everything old is new again.

I am sick of people defining themselves by the color of their skin. MLK had it right, content of character, all that stuff...

I remember about a dozen years ago, when I was working in a document storage warehouse, a couple of black employees said they were considering moving to Georgia because the black community in the San Francisco Bay area wasn't large enough.

I'm fine with that. May I suggest Africa? They've just about exterminated all the whites there so good to go.

Students demand ability to select roommate based on race during days-long sit-in

The Chancellor at Syracuse University has stated that he will actively work with a group of students who have issued several demands meant to address a racism issue at the school, including the institution of a new policy that would require students be offered an option to choose that their roommate share the same race.

The demand to allow "students of color" to elect not to room with students of other races was one of several such demands issued by a group of protesting students who aired their concerns about racism on campus during an ongoing sit-in. Syracuse Chancellor Kent Syverud spoke at the sit-in in a live-streamed exchange.

I will never live in another town with public transportation.

No public transportation = safer communities.

Can you grasp the concept that African Americanism is a separate culture? Do you have a problem with student organizations for Hispanics, Jews, Catholics, Asians, Indians........

I totally get it's a separate culture, but no one has challenged that so I'm unclear on your point.

What is wrong with them wanting their own space?

What's wrong is wanting a University or any state supported entity to finance and enforce a racially exclusive facility. Sorry but we fought over these issues in the 60's. I suggest you educate yourself.

One solution might be to go back to the country your forefathers left when they came to America and see how that works for you.

You can educate me on where you got "wanting a University or any state supported entity to finance and enforce a racially exclusive facility".

    What in Hades?

Why would public transport equate to crime? How odd.

Why? It isn't in the UK, amongst Sub-Saharan Africa-derived peoples. Nor in much of Europe. Nor is it amongst same in my country.

That challenge is needed. We either want an end to racism, or we don't.

They are human beings, are they not? All speaking the same language, all with a shared national identity, etc. What on earth possible difference could skin colour make to that equation? It's like saying you won't mix with people who have red hair, or freckles, or who are short.

Public transportation brings minorities from the city, who bring crime.

    I am from Massachusetts.

Randolph use to be a nice low crime Jewish town. Then they started a bus from mattapan
To Randolph down rt28 & all the minorities started moving from the city to Randolph.

Crime increased, home values dropped & it is now a place to avoid.

In my country, public transport to the city is used predominantly by the middle classes and above. City jobs are not generally available to the lower socio-economic orders, nor is city real estate.

Also, our criminally inclined rustics don't care for public transport, preferring cars. You do get the usual crazies who ride trains all day of course, and some thuggish behavior late at night - but city commuter trains are very civilised.
