Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday said that he expects a resolution blocking President Trump's emergency declaration to pass the Senate, but he does not believe lawmakers will be able to override a veto.

"I think what is clear in the Senate is that there will be enough votes to pass the resolution of disapproval, which will then be vetoed by the president and then in all likelihood the veto will be upheld in the House," McConnell said while speaking to reporters in Kentucky.

McConnell added that while he was supporting Trump's emergency declaration, he was "hoping he wouldn't take that particular path."

"Yeah I am," he said, asked if he was concerned about the precedent set for a Democratic president. "That's one reason I argued obviously without success to the president that he not take this route."

The congress seems to be starting to work around the president instead of with him. It’s an interesting twist in a blatant power grab by the executive branch that even has his own party concerned.

So far trump has had to veto zero bills. Is this the beginning of a lame duck presidency?

Without a 2/3rd vote in the Senate to override the President's veto, his declaration stands.

And they can disavow responsibility, which is all Congress is good at.

It will be trumps first veto, against his own party. I’m glad the republicans are slowly abandoning shielding him from his presidential duties.

It’s completely within his ability to veto — like the big boy that he is.

Well that's not true. It won't be against his own party. Perhaps some members of it, but the fact is it will be against New Democratic Party members.

Do try to be a little honest.

They ought to make up their minds.

Yes your honor. I know Congress just voted to block Trumps National Emergency and voted about how much money he should have for his wall, but we think you should approve it anyway.:judge:

This is a good thing. Democrats are taking a sudden interest in opposing overreach and abuse of power.

If they do not want him to have this power maybe they should not have created and then voted on a law GIVING him the power. They wrote the legislation, they voted on it, the Supreme court did not say anything. Perhaps if they dont like it they could I dont know maybe get enough votes to change the law. This is not over reach or a power grab. This is a situation of the President using the powers granted to him by Congress to his advantage.

You called it a veto against his own party. Are you suggesting a few Republicans are the whole Republican Party?

Yes, congress is rendering themselves useless. Soon, there will be no need for them as they don't do their job and likely is a reason they can't get above 20% approval rating.

    Why is that good?
1 party having an interest doesn't do much, does it?

What part of what I posted is wishful thinking?

That republicans will actually start holding him accountable? You are probably correct unfortunately

The veto will be against the Republican senate and the Senate Leader is also against trumps declaration. I never said the entire party. It’s begining to splinter under the sheer lunacy and corruption that is this administration. I’m appalled it took this long.

Huh, the republicans did not need to start, the republicans never rubberstamped Trump's positions in the first place, they did not pass the repeal of Obamacare (it's dead anyway but not de-jure), the tax reform took countless iterations and negotiations before it passed...

That's not "holding Trump accountable", that's a legitimate plurality of opinions in the Republican party... something Obama-a%s kissing and Pelosi-blindly obeying totalitarianism and strong-hand loving liberals will probably never understand.

I'll be very interested to see the final Senate vote after people other than the 4 Benedicts have gone on record as saying this is a bad idea.. it wont be a beto-proof (ooops, make that veto-proof) total, but I suspect it will be more than 51.. 55-57 is doable...

    Baby steps from the babies...

January 2017 was the beginning of Trump's lame duck presidency, though I didn't know it at the time.

Isn't this what I was saying, 48 hours ago? ;) Congress has betrayed we the people, and is a self-serving 100 K grand theft. This latest stunt in the House of Representatives is the most recent example.

That still doesn't give the prez the right to steal from the American people.
Especially a National Emergency that he clearly stated during the declaration, that he didn't need to do this. That is NOT a NE.

Are you going to be ok with the theft when another prez instill gun controls in response to a mass shooting?
Or an Universal healthcare plan because to many people don't have insurance?

The real question is: how are the Three Branches of govt equal if the President can only be overruled by 66% of the Senate?
