"Domestic Violence Loophole Closure Act will ensure anyone convicted of domestic violence in military court cannot legally purchase a firearm....

"This bill permanently clarifies the ambiguity in 1996 Lautenberg amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968 as it applies to the military, and requires the military to report misdemeanors of domestic violence to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) database to be used in background checks for all legal gun purchases. Despite the Lautenberg amendment’s intentions, since the NICS database was modernized in 2007,
only one case of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence conviction has been reported"

So domestic violence committed by soldiers is very rarely reported (only one time in the last ten years). People on both sides should be in favor of closing this loophole.

What exactly is the loophole? I thought the killer wasn't reported because the Air Force F'd up.

gun banners like to pretend that there are loopholes when in reality the law works as intended if people actually follow the law

There was no loop hole. Our trusted bureaucrats failed to report to NICS. They can pass this but if the proper authorities fail to report, those that should be prohibited will still be able to purchase firearms.
Another case of trying to pass a law when there is already a law in place.

Its not a loophole, a loophole is an intentional hole left from which to operate out of. Like a tax deduction, its not a "loophole" as in a means to avoid the rule, but a loophole an intentional carve out.

There is not a carve out here, no loophole involved, because the military is SUPPOSED to report to NICS on this issue and hadn't.

There was no loophole. There was a failure of enforcing current laws. If you're covicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence, you lose ypur gun rights. Period.

Worth noting that the ONLY Republican willing to put his name on a bill that will keep guns out of the hands of some of the mentally unstable has nothing to fear from the NRA since he is not running for reelection.

The rest of the elected GOP cowards don't have what it takes to stand up to the NRA.

Why make a law that already exists? It's illegal for someone who has domestic abuse misdemeanor to own a firearm. Period.

I think we should make it illegal to commit murder.

Since 45% of US adult female homicide victims are killed by means other than guns according to CDC WISQARS data, that means that US women are also about 9 times more likely to be murdered by knives, clubs or hands than women in other countries would be murdered by guns. That's not a gun issue, that's a violent men issue.

The article says that there is some ambiguity in the law. This new law would make it clear that both civilians and soldiers convicted of domestic violence are prohibited from owning guns.
