Serious question -- what do Trump supporters think the citizenship question was supposed to DO?

I ask again: how do you expect to determine the number of illegals by asking on the census "Are you a citizen of the United States?"

I ask again. If it's such a meaningless question why are afraid to ask it?

If you have a Green Card or visa, your not an American citizen are you? Your a legal citizen here on a temp permit.

Personally I'd think that whether or not someone was a citizen is a very important part of their identity in this country. I'd actually have a more detailed question as to what status they have in this country. For the best results, census data wouldn't be used to remove illegals so we can get accurate data.

No. A visa is a temp permit. Green Card are for permanent residency. But no, in either case, you aren't a citizen, as I've mentioned several times here myself. That's why it is weird to say "if somebody is a citizen as opposed to an illegal." Because millions of people are neither.

It would definitely be more accurate if it weren't used for removals, and I think legally that the information of an individual can't be accessed by anyone but that individual for quite some time (more than a lifetime). However, the US had used census data before for Japanese internment camps, so people are on edge. Especially since Trump seems willing to violate the Constitution to try to curb illegal immigration.

Regardless, the primary purpose of the census is to tally the number of people residing in this country and where they reside. Anything that complicates that purpose is problematic, and the guy who originally made the push for this question admitted that his purpose was to drive a less accurate tally, which is very likely what would happen.

It has nothing to do with being "afraid." And I'm asking why add it. "Why not?" Isn't a good answer. It isn't an answer at all. The main reason I don't want to see it asked is because it contradicts the Constitutional mission of the census. If we changed that mission with an amendment, then sure.

Well "MPO" it's a damn sight better then asking nothing at all.. Maybe we should incorporate that sort of short sighted thought process into firearm sales, home loans and security positions, hell, fook'it why not just go with what ever the person claims...

That's the liberal pretty much now :)

I was more upset by the "departure from what the framers of the Constitution intended". It's disturbing to see someone come right out and SAY they want to overthrow the country you live in, though obviously that doesn't bother you one little bit.
    ,
Stop giving yourselves such credit, no one is scared of you authoritarians We've seen your sort come and go several times before this and you won't be around much longer, (at least not in visible politics, though you're always there, like certain insects that run when the lights come on)

The objective is to get an accurate headcount.

Knocking on someone's door and saying "I'm here from the federal government and I want to know how many noncitizens live here" is NOT how you get an accurate headcount.

That IS how you get people to slam the door.

Anyone wanting to ask that question is working to PREVENT an accurate count.

The question is to determine in what geographic regions has the highest concentration of illegal immigrants in order to allow the concentration of law enforcement resources in order to (hopefully) remove illegal aliens from our country.

Not this question has been on the census forms as recently as 2000.

But was it illegal to use the census data imprison the Japanese?

    When has Trump done this?

The purpose of the census should be to tally the number of citizens and non-citizens who are actually here legally and belong here. There is no need to tally the number of illegal residents as they should be caught and removed immediately. And they aren't really responding to the census that much anyway, so their counts are already inaccurate.

The question won't answer what you want it to. Many won't self report and millions of people who aren't citizens are legal

ALL Hispanics should pay particular attention to this. I see lots of testimonials from Hispanics who say "we support Trump because we think illegal immigrants insult us". Don't be fooled, this question is clear proof that Trump and Trumpers want you to be underrepresented in the legislatures. It's not just the illegals it's ALL Hispanics and I don't see how they can make that objective much clearer, no matter what they say.

    Read the link.
It's the census that replaced the short form and comes out every year.

This is a small sample ice goes after the easy targets because Trump wants numbers up. Immigrants, even legal ones, get real nervous when people like this get arrested for deportation. If ice deports a million ad they claim they're poised to do you can bet a disproportionate number will be people like these and migrant workers and not gang bangers and drug dealers, those are hard targets

Can't help you with what the Right think (you'll need to ask them), but it's obvious to anyone not fast asleep that all questions in a census are 'optional'. No one has to answer any of them truthfully.

In which case, why would a single, specific, optional question be removed, unless there's some agenda attached to that particularly question. That's also obvious.
