Question - What would it take for an author to prove himself to his novel characters?

    Answer - A condescension

I can author a character that knows that they are a character. I can even create a dialog between myself and that character. That dialog would not be a conversation; it would be a condescension.

    Prayer and enlightenment are condescensions.

History is replete with indications that He has done so for others. Why you expect Him to do it for you I have no idea.
Assuming you're talking about people, what you've seen are creations of His that became corrupted through sin.

‘A God’? Why not many gods? Many Creators?
    What does merciful mean?

    Many Americans have heard of Thomas Paine, a writer philosopher from the time centered on the events of the Revolution, but few of them have read his pamphlet ‘Common Sense’ that have significant impact on shaping early colonists thinking about independence. He wrote on many subjects, including the following skepticism piece on religious beliefs, still relevant today;

are you referring to the Sun God?

sure I feel his life giving heat on my face in the summer, can see him, but still know the truth regardless

if you're saying you would not feel guilty about doing bad thing if you didn't believe in a God, I say to you... keep believing - just people should not do bad things in the name of their God, cause that doesn't make them good

so you reject the Sun God even though you know he is life giving, can feel his power and see him?

look around you at all the things that would not exist if not for the Sun God, how can you not believe :)

I don't believe the Christian, Muslim or Mormon version of Jesus either... do you?

those were the ancient middle eastern understandings

in fact they had to rename Jesus from the early stories as he sounded too middle eastern for many to believe in

if the bible were the truth, when someone read it, they would just go... duh, why didn't I see that before, there would be no need to defend the bible, it would just make sense, why doesn't the bible do this, because obviously man wrote the bible, not a god

realistically, presuming their is a god that created something so incomprehensible as the universe...
I cannot imagine such a being would care if we believed in it or not....and certainly would not be bothered to prove itself to us. Imo, Our importance to this being might be comparable to our concern for an ant farm in Timbuktu

It seems irrelevant in light of the self evident truth that one honors ones Father regardless his Fathers lineage. Father is Father. yes/no?

If God showed himself to the world, we'd all be accountable regardless our preparations for such a thing. As such, his collective absence is a kindness of sorts.

If a god exists and is all powerful then he/she/it can stop time while allowing consciousness to continue so that one message can be delivered to all humanity at the same time. That would do it for me.

Or one might say that those who listened to him were saved. But yes, that would be the one. My point was in reference to your query about who made God. I said that one naturally honors ones Father regardless his pedigree. Meaning, what difference does it make who made God or if he just always existed. What matters is that he made us. Either that or the sum total of each of us is nothing more than animated dust. And if that is the case, then everything about us beyond our creatures, including religion, love, forgiveness, conscience, happiness, sadness, justice, philosophy, rights, right and wrong and all else is nothing more than vanity or a fairy tale.
