Sounds like a good thread for @Adfundum to initiate.

Lord knows I could use the relief of the boredom that results
from three simultaneous quotes and replies all same, same, same.

    1) Judging people outside their time is so . . . .
    2) Lee was loyal to his State of Virginia. And Virginia left the Union.
Lee was not a supporter of leaving the union but, loyal to his State.
I wonder how many detractors of Robert E. Lee have actually done some study?
    Study as opposed to parroting.

The last word on this is yours' @Adfundum, ttfn

    GREATNESS
George Washington was a great man of his era because he
divested himself of power several times. Unusual for his time.
    Yet a slave owner too.

In no way is there a comparable similarity between statues/ displays of Christian saints and confederates. Even schools named after Lee have been re-named in California; I think all of them. It's hard enough for LA city to keep repairing vandalism of Trump's star on Hollywood Blvd or try to protect those who chose to wear MAGA caps in public. But if anything connected to the Confederacy isn't removed or put in another setting [warehouse/ museum] than I can not blame those who desecrate these symbols. I have never seen a Confederate monument but if I did my first impulse would be to spit on it.

You forgot the Trump star in the similarity clause. ;)

The similarity is censorship by Mob Rule.
Hooliganism in thought if not deed.

You have the right to your opinion but I am glad that Confederate monuments are being removed and OK with citizens destroying/ desecrating them at will.

People are going away from PC since they realized it was BS. It is nothing more than the radical lefts attempt to squelch free speech.

When it comes to the Confederacy it is not PC as evidenced by tearing down their monuments/ renaming schools, etc.

The "fools" are those who defend the horror of Southern treason and enslavement of human beings. No American is proud of that history.

I think we need one simple rule:

    Dont be a sh** c***.

That covers both PC and anti-PC. Dont be wilfully hurtful, but dont be neurotically concerned with unreasonable feelings. Just be a good person, and nobody can help you with that but yourself.

You know when you're being a jerk.

I innocently thought this thread was about religious symbolism in a secular society. Things like crosses in parks and even statues of Christ or saints. As a Catholic I appreciate religious art inside a church but have no reservations about removing them from public lands. Monuments with Confederate figures are an entirely different issue and considered the antichrist to Christians.

I generally try make # 1 upload as broad as possible.
Such as, "All Things Australia" in the Australia forum ;)

And I do object to the current "mob rule" on any long time displays on public grounds
or long time habits at public schools, such as Christmas shows, and items mentioned earlier in this thread.
I remember near the Hollywood sign I use to hike to the big white cross
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Cross
    [IMG]
    Would it be permitted today?

Remember when the Christians were making war on Halloween?
The second most spending holiday in :flagus:.

And this thread was inspired by St. Monica
in whose memory exists the City of Santa Monica (or is it a region of LA, like Hollywood?)
    that placed a stature . . .

The separation of Church and State is vital to our democracy unless one is willing to let every religious group free expression on public lands. I don't.

No it's not. Your side is the minority, and by far.

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news...icans-think-confederate-statues-should-remain

For example, there's twice as many people who want to keep confederate statues than there are who want to remove them.

    This, however, is mob rule.

While that my be a good point of debate, it doesn't justify monuments to honor those whose place in history is blemished.
Lee's loyalty may be seen as honorable to some, however, his loyalty to his state or to any other cause necessarily included a support for slavery. That alone is reason enough to not erect monuments to honor him.

Hitler and Lee were not even close in comparison, and by all accounts, Lee was a good person. Regardless of whether or not slavery was part of his motivation or if it was an accepted institution of the time, it is part of his legacy. And though his loyalty and personality will not be forgotten, neither will that indirect support for slavery.

And for that his memory is forever blemished. Time and place are no reason to forget evils of people.

Since so many of those statues and memorials were erected long after the war by groups including the KKK and those sharing the same values, their purpose has more to do with a statement of White superiority. Move them to history museums.

Such a broad statement. Whose traditions? How far back do we hold to that ideal? What if those traditions are not so pleasant? Should we bring back public executions? Fertility rites? Human sacrifice?
