I am not Roman Catholic........ (but I have to admit that the Catholic idea of Purgatory did have me wondering for a time if I should be)........ but my understanding is that based on this verse: "And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." [Matthew 16:18] ... the Roman Catholic Church decided to elect a leader from among their cardinals......... to serve as head of the church....... and the teaching is that the Pope sits on the Throne of Cephas / Peter! For the record as you can see from the *.... mine is one of the three Yes votes here: Is the Catholic concept of Purgatory more accurate than heaven vs hell? Is the Catholic concept of Purgatory more accurate than heaven vs hell? * Yes 3 vote(s) 75.0% No 1 vote(s) 25.0% I am not sure but I kind of hope so! 0 vote(s) 0.0% Change Your Vote .......... The governmental structure of the Roman Catholic Church reminds me of Constitutional Monarchy....... but others would argue that it is based more on the Roman government system of the fifth century. The fact that the Pope is supposed to be celibate.... and is not supposed to have children......... (and therefore cannot pass on the office to his children).......adds something quite different to the formula..... .that could somewhat remind one of the way that the Dali Lama is chosen.
I just wanted to cast my personal vote for the Catholic Church allowing priests & nuns to marry. The Protestant churches have proven it possible to be married and still be an effective church leader. Even the great guru Lahiri Mahasaya was married, and he was closer to God than any priest, nun or Pope.
I'm not Catholic. What's the difference? I thought "Jesuit" was just a Catholic priesthood with a special focus.
Regarding the previous five posts: 1. Many Catholic priests are married. Only Latin Rite priests do not marry. This is not a "doctrine" but merely a "discipline" which means a pope can change at any time. 2. Jesuits are Catholics, just like Dominicans, Franciscans, Carmelites, and many others. These are called "Religious Orders". Many priests and nuns belong to religious orders. Mother Theresa belonged to the Missionaries of Charity. 3. Catholic "government" - too complicated for right now, maybe later. 4 What is a pope: See my post from another forum:
I have to admit.......... that one of the reasons why I decided to not become Roman Catholic........ is because I really was not enthused with the idea of going UNDER..... Jesuit authority............ the Franciscans have a very, very different approach to spirituality...... I was truly impressed to read about other Roman Catholic theologians coming right out and giving credit both to little Colton Burpo and to his mom and dad........ a Protestant minister and his wife! Heaven Is for Real” and the Gospel of Life Paul Kengor WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 2014
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I truly thank you for this information...... .that frankly I did not know!
He has taught nothing that is counter to the Catholic faith. Now, the liberals (and the far right) claim he has taught things contrary to the faith, but they both have ulterior motives. The problem he has is that he speaks as a priest, not as a theologian, and he isn't very precise at times. He's a good man, and he's doing his best. My only criticism of him is that he has been too merciful to the accused child molestors and their hiders (he's been rougher on them than former Popes, but still has a way to go).
Purgatory is a stage on the way to heaven. Souls in purgatory are in process of going to heaven. It's not an alternative to heaven or hell.
Jesuits are Catholics, and Pope Francis was chosen by the Cardinals as a group. He is our legitimate Pope, and those who claim he's not are simply being misled (or are misleading others).
It is a religious order that is part of the Catholic Church. There are basically two types of priests--ordered priests and diocesan priests. Ordered priests serve God through their order, and their hierarchy is based within their order. Diocesan priests serve through their local diocese, and their hierarchy is based on their local diocese. Most priests are diocesan, and serve their entire career in one (or sometimes two) dioceses. Other orders besides the Jesuits include the Dominicans, the Franciscans, the Congregation of the Holy Cross (based in Notre Dame), and the Benedictines. There are probably a dozen more, but those are the most well known. If you hear about a priest who takes a vow of poverty, it's an ordered priests. Diocesan priests take no such vow.
Well, I don't think the Catholic Church will ever let priests or nuns marry. That said, I do see allowing married men to become priests being the case in the near future (we already allow married men who were first priests in other faiths to become priests). I also see married women being allowed to be deacons in the future. I don't see allowing people who've already taken religious vows to marry after taking their vows. The eastern rite churches (which are part of the Roman Catholic Church) already allow married men to become priests (although they can never rise in the church hierarchy to become a bishop).
No, given the rules of the Catholic Church. Jesuits are Catholics. This Pope was elected by the Cardinals. There are no doubts about either of those statements being true.
Wow!!!!!! That video is AWESOME and perfectly illustrates why people like myself..... and you Canell....... we keep an open mind and we don't simply laugh off such seemingly strange phenomena and claims. I am at the five minute mark and I would just like to mention that the "Greedy Eagle".... Emperor Napoleon......... may well have made it into heaven after all............ and to a significant degree a relatively good example ..... .and the fervent prayers.......... by the particular Pope who had to deal with Napoleon......... may have played a massive role in Napoleon coming to repentance and actually making it into heaven! Could Napoleon have made it into heaven? For the record...... my goals in beginning this discussion are likely quite different than the Roman Catholics who see this discussion probably assume.......... ...... I actually think that His Holiness Pope Francis has one of the most difficult callings on his life of anybody in several centuries......... I do not envy him for the heavy responsibility that he carries........ .... and I generally approve of how he is doing so far........ ... but I feel that it is my responsibility to add to his burden by letting him know that I personally feel strongly that the twelve have reincarnated at this time at that the astonishingly gifted Pastor Rick Joyner has an absolutely massive Cephas - Peter and Elijah calling on his life......... which I would suggest that Pope Francis and all Catholics take seriously.......... It cannot be pure coincidence that this technically Charismatic Catholic or Pentecostal Pastor was given a brilliant message from the Patriarch Adam........ that has the power to play a significant role in the "turning of the hearts of the children to the fathers"...... A message from Adam to all mankind by Rick Joyner.
"Peter the Roman, who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations, and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills [i.e. Rome] will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The End." Pope Francis isn't named Peter, and he's not Roman. Conclusion: those papal philosophies fail hard. But then, they are faked. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prophecy_of_the_Popes --- Given the very accurate description of popes up to around 1590 and lack of accuracy for the popes that follow, historians generally conclude that the alleged prophecies are a fabrication written shortly before they were published. Certain theologians in the Roman Catholic Church have dismissed them as forgery.[1][2] The Catholic Church has no official stance on the prophecies, however. ---
I agree that we Christians have made some terrible errors............ This is especially true of us after we are blessed financially........ or elevated into positions of power and responsibility. I know that I and my old church....... .we really got into pretty terrible spiritual pride........ ... .Frankly Pope Francis seems like a genuinely sincere and basically humble man..... especially considering the high office that he is in........ All of us Christians need to pray and ask to be given wisdom........... The only fairly serious example of pride on the Pope Francis is his lack of discernment for the massive Cyrus calling that is on the life and calling on President Donald Trump....... But I think all of us can learn a lot from the way that Pope Francis does not want to use high titles....... He terms himself "The Bishop of Rome"........ a quite humble title considering the others that he could emphasize. I do hope that Pope Francis and those around him can recognize the astonishing calling on this Christian who prayed and asked Messiah Yeshua - Jesus for wisdom..... and correction........ and wow... but he got it! Pastor Rick is one of the Christian leaders who had the discernment to see that President Trump had a high calling on his life. http://64.71.77.248/fq-protestant/tfq-en.html Me and my old church.............. we gossiped and talked about the flaws and scandals in other churches far, far, far, far too much......... .and then G-d scattered my old church in about 250 or more directions......................... I believe that this was done largely because we had allowed what knowledge we had to go to our heads and make us proud. Now I know that we also were astonishingly ignorant in comparison to what Messiah Yeshua - Jesus was making available........ even to others that we looked down on.
Several Catholic Theologians wisely...... .and accurately noticed that little Colton Burpo....... was telling his dad, Pastor Todd Burpo some surprisingly Catholic concepts........ that there was no way that a Protestant child could have been taught. (I am referring mostly to his meeting his miscarried sister in heaven with Jesus......... and he had not been told that he would have a previously deceased sister there. His parents had no idea a miscarried child could meet their family in heaven later on)! http://www.spiritdaily.net/heavenisforreal.htm
I guess when you cannot just ask for forgiveness you tend to avoid doing things that would need to be forgiven.
I do have the impression that Pope Francis is in the top five to one percent of Christians for most good character traits. He is obviously humble......... in spite of the fact that he is exceptionally well informed on so many topics........ Most of us Christians tend to allow knowledge to go to our heads..... he has done what sure appears to me to be an exceptional job of being humble......... in spite of his exceptional intellect and character. He is living in an astonishingly challenging time period though and here is perhaps one of the greatest challenges facing Pope Francis....... all Roman Catholics............. all Christians........ all Jews.... and all eight billion of us really! The being of light of NDE fame, G-d or Satan? Personally..... I think that the presence of a life changing Life Review in a near death experience is a massive sign that it is probably a genuine encounter with heaven. http://www.drbo.org/chapter/30006.htm "For my angel is with you: And I myself will demand an account of your souls" (Baruch 6:6) "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this the judgment:" (Hebrews 9:27)
