The NFL: Big Business With Big Tax Breaks

If you walk into NFL headquarters on Park Avenue in Manhattan, "you think you're in the headquarters of Goldman Sachs," says Gregg Easterbrook, author of King of Sports: Football's Impact on America.

The NFL is registered as a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization — even with a commissioner who makes nearly $30 million a year. From the tax code to big stadium deals, critics say the NFL is getting millions of public dollars that would be better spent elsewhere.

The NFL league office is organized as a 501(c)(6), a part of the tax code that exempts thing like business leagues, chambers of commerce and trade associations.

Why is the NFL given the tax status of a charity? This is absurd and the perfect example of the super rich writing the tax code for themselves.

They should lose their tax exempt status just like he churches should have theirs revoked, no need to provide them with taxpayers money for promoting fairy tales and brainwash children

The idea behind not-for-profit tax exempt status is that these organizations are doing something beneficial for the public. So it doesn't make sense to tax them if they're already giving to the public in some way.

Of course the question arises, in some cases like the NFL, how much of the funds of these organizations are actually being spent for a good cause?
When a not-for-profit builds a lavish palace for their administrators, obviously that's not in the public benefit.

They’re not given the tax status of a charity. As you said yourself, they’re given the status of a non-profit sporting league. How are you proposing the tax regulations are changed to exclude the NFL and who else would be impacted by those changes?

Or have you not really thought this through but the NFL is the hate target de jour and this is just being picked up as a means to an end?

The NFL is clearly a for profit business. It should have never been given tax exempt status. Just proves money buys favors.

Govt should not be involved in any of the above - not businesses, not universities or education, not religion. But govt is deeply involved in all of them.

And govt should set tax rates based on what the govt needs to operate, not on social engineering, not on political favouritism.

The safest and best tax system is simple - a flat rate, no deductions, no credits, no tax exemption for anyone, everyone pays. You make $1, you send 15 cents to the govt.

Maybe we should just get rid of tax code 501(c)(6) altogether? Only truly charitable organizations should be tax exempt.

It's the NFL organization, not the teams. The teams are taxed.

That said, the sports organizations should be non-profits. yes, the NFL benefits from this, but to be fair, you would need to tax all of the pro sports associations, and that would be rough for the minor leagues and the less popular sports. I don't want to punish them (and taxes are usually punishment).

Well, they aren't designed to make money--this is for the NFL commisioner and his staff primarily, not for the teams (which are taxed). They are an organizer for the leagues. I don't see what profit they make anyway. I'm against taxation as a general rule.

meanwhile Conservative ministers and pastors routinely take sides on political issues, yet you dont want to strip THEM of their tax-exempt status.
