The Media and Public Opinion Research Group did a survey last month about how Americans feel about the US's involvement in the UN.

It breaks down a little differently among demographic groups, but I'm kind of surprised by how many people think the US should withdraw or significantly decrease its involvement. I'd be really interested in hearing any arguments for that POV. I'd also be interested in any perspectives from other nationalities... How do you feel about your country's involvement in the UN?

The only problem with that is the risk of what happened to the League of Nations happening to the UN, and we all know what that triggered.

The UN represents the status quo established at the end of WWII. That era is now over.

To remain legitimate the UN would have to adapt to the new distribution of power in the world. But it won't be able to adapt. Thus, the UN will be delegitimized in the eyes of the peoples of the world as time passes.

There is no getting around this.

It should be less involved in terms of power and influence in the current state of the United Nations as it would be favorable to human interests. The Security Council system only functions when the great powers allow it to as a result of granting the most powerful the power to veto resolutions and block international action. The UN functions to look out for the interests of the superpower rather than of humanity. All states must be involved in order for the interests of the world's people to be addressed and prioritized. If the global entity were to be reformed in which all states share equal, balanced democratic voices to serve as checks against state corruption with intensely involved and active international members the world would likely be a much better place. This progress can only be retained as long as governments are kept in check by the people's will and can only be achieved by the force of the people's will. This change can only be achieved by the force of the people's will. It can only be gained when the people's eyes recognize the potential a global system has, and sees that there there are opportunities to change things and assumes that there is hope and that they can contribute to making a better world.

I certainly like the concept of the UN...United Nations...something that 'should' bring together the world's nations under one policy/law. However, regarding the USA, they will always demand veto power or unilateral power, and without the world's superpower USA involved at an equitable level of world government, the UN can never function as it should. So we will never have an effective United Nations because the USA and others feel they are above the policies and laws which would be constructed by the collective UN. No matter our arrogance in this issue, I still think the US could achieve more UN involvement of member nations, find some consensus, and stop going it alone as the self-appointed world's police and so-called peace keeper.

Maybe the USA can consider a new approach, like creating the USAWorld government in which the USA creates all the policies and laws, can rule the roost, and recoup costs from USAWorld member nations? One example how this might work is the USA could approach Iran, and if Iran agrees to a democratic government and no military actions and no nuclear proliferation, etc. then they become allies with USAWorld who provides military protection, trade development, democracy development, etc. BUT...even this won't work because of the BS politics with Israel...I'd say we're screwed as ever having world government/order...
