Should there be two different types of prisons?

If you have extremely long prison sentences like that, it could end up making robberies more deadly, because the robber knows they do not have much to lose anyway if caught, and may drive them to more desperate acts to avoid being captured.

I've always believed the severe punishment should only come down if the robber actually kills someone. Then they'll be under very serious pressure not to actually kill someone during the robbery, though things can always unexpectedly go wrong.

Yes, I realize the line has to be drawn somewhere, but we should be careful where we draw it. (i.e. a criminal who has already killed 2 people has nothing to lose by killing 3, we're not going to punish them less for killing 2 people just so they don't kill the third, for example)

More comfortable prison conditions (in certain circumstances) might be a compromise towards those who want to do away with lifetime prison sentences, when it's believed it might not be safe for the rest of society because of what the criminal did in the distant past.

Then there are other situations, like a husband who walked in on his wife in bed with another man and totally lost it and killed them both with his bare hands. In that case, for example, maybe send the man to the uncomfortable prison for 7 years, and then serve time in the more comfortable prison for another 8 years.

(In traditional France, these were called "crimes of passion" and it was believed the lover suffered temporary insanity and was almost always sentenced to less prison time because it was believed they weren't entirely in control of their faculties. Now with muslim culture taking over, these traditionalist views are probably going to be reinforced, but maybe those involved will have to actually be married now instead of merely lovers)

The European view of the purpose of prison is very different from the American view, as espoused by yourself.

Just last Sunday night 60 Minutes did a segment on a so far VERY successful experiment in the Connecticut prison system. Considering your strong emotions on the matter, you should consider informing yourself. It's good for the soul.
