The obvious question of "so what?" must be asked with regard to the above. What ultimate, meaningful difference, does such actually make? Is it going to be argued on the part of yourself that, if firearms simply were not available to the general public, with all other factors being equal, those forty thousands deaths per year simply would not happen?
Speculation. Psychiatric care will do absolutely no good, even if it is free, if those who are in need simply refuse to seek out help for whatever reason. Even if it were not, it would do nothing to address the matter of those who murder others simply because they do not view the lives of their victims of holding any value or worth.
About 100% of people value their own freedom. About 0% of people would want to be even in humane Scandinavian prison. Welfare State in Canada and Scandinavia saves hundreds of thousands of lives.
Probably ten thousand of them would still happen. But a firearm ban and Free Medical Care can save tens of thousands of lives per year. All humans have value.
