"The nation might be in a better position to act if medical and public health researchers had continued to study these issues as diligently as some of us did between 1985 and 1997. But in 1996, pro-gun members of Congress mounted an all-out effort to eliminate the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Although they failed to defund the center, the House of Representatives removed $2.6 million from the CDC's budget—precisely the amount the agency had spent on firearm injury research the previous year....

"When other agencies funded high-quality research, similar action was taken. In 2009, Branas et al published the results of a case-control study that examined whether carrying a gun increases or decreases the risk of firearm assault. In contrast to earlier research, this particular study was funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Two years later, Congress extended the restrictive language it had previously applied to the CDC to all Department of Health and Human Services agencies, including the National Institutes of Health.

"These are not the only efforts to keep important health information from the public and patients. For example, in 1997, Cummings et al used state-level data from Washington to study the association between purchase of a handgun and the subsequent risk of homicide or suicide. Similar studies could not be conducted today because Washington State's firearm registration files are no longer accessible.

"In 2011, Florida's legislature passed and Governor Scott signed HB 155, which subjects the state's health care practitioners to possible sanctions, including loss of license, if they discuss or record information about firearm safety that a medical board later determines was not 'relevant' or was 'unnecessarily harassing.'....

"The US military is grappling with an increase in suicides within its ranks. Earlier this month, an article by 2 retired generals—a former chief and a vice chief of staff of the US Army— asked Congress to lift a little-noticed provision in the 2011 National Defense Authorization Act that prevents military commanders and noncommissioned officers from being able to talk to service members about their private weapons, even in cases in which a leader believes that a service member may be suicidal.

"Health researchers are ethically bound to conduct, analyze, and report studies as objectively as possible and communicate the findings in a transparent manner. Policy makers, health care practitioners, and the public have the final decision regarding whether they will accept, much less act on, those data. Criticizing research is fair game; suppressing research by targeting its sources of funding is not....

"Injury prevention research can have real and lasting effects. Over the last 20 years, the number of Americans dying in motor vehicle crashes has decreased by 31%. Deaths from fires and drowning have been reduced even more, by 38% and 52%, respectively. This progress was achieved without banning automobiles, swimming pools, or matches. Instead, it came from translating research findings into effective interventions."

Yet another rehash of erroneous talking points, all based on the equally erroneous misrepresentation of what the Dickey amendment does and does not do?

Must the actual language be cited once again, showing that it prohibits the use of funding for the purpose of either advocating or promoting firearm-related restrictions, while doing nothing to prohibit legitimate firearm-related research?

And the number of firearm-related deaths and injuries have also been decreasing significantly in the united states, all without the need of legal or medical interventions to try and protect the public from its own negative impulses. The number of firearms in private circulation has increased, as well as the number of individuals carrying firearms in public, yet the firearm-related homicide and injury rates have continued to decrease.

BS. There is no shortage of results on the subject. FBI has already compiled all the data you need. Using the CDC as a weapon against the second amendment is an abuse of power and should never be tolerated.

And yet you still lead the world in mass shootings. The only countries with higher murder rates are third world countries with poverty and poor policing

The united states is fooling not only itself, but the rest of the world, in presenting the notion that it is anything other than a third world nation.

Even if such was not the case, exactly what could research reveal that would serve to stop such from being the case?

If there is a conflict between the Second Amendment and public safety then that is something that should be honestly acknowledged. Suppressing the truth because you don't like it is unacceptable.

    The authors addressed that point:

"Precisely what was or was not permitted under the clause was unclear. But no federal employee was willing to risk his or her career or the agency's funding to find out. Extramural support for firearm injury prevention research quickly dried up. Even today, 17 years after this legislative action, the CDC's website lacks specific links to information about preventing firearm-related violence."

Gun nuts keep adding to their arsenals but the percentage of Americans who are gun owners has gone down. The US still has a much higher rate of gun violence than most developed nations. So despite the decrease there is still a lot of room for improvement.

As I already stated, the FBI has already compiled all the data. Nothing is being suppressed. I do find it interesting to see you use the term "conflict" in the same sentence you are suggesting giving up liberty for security.

    What truth?
Not only did the CDC report of 2013 not come close to suggesting a conflict but Heller vs DC the majority did not allow balancing as an argument in deciding the case.
If any group does suppression, distortion, and deception, it is GCA’s and the mainstream media.

Why .you have more mass shootings than anywhere else?

What is the best way of reducing childhood morbidity and mortality in relation to firearms

What are the indicators that might show someone about to commit a mass shooting

How to stop Americans drilling holes in each other whilst still allowing you your guns

No it hasn’t and there is a vast difference between raw compiled data and an epidemiological study

You have to have security first in order to enjoy liberty. If you ended up in a wheelchair due to gunshot you probably wouldn't feel very free.

There is no conflict. The second amendment is not authorizing or otherwise enabling the criminal misuse of firearms. One is not connected nor directly related to the other.

The author does not have a clue as to what they are attempting to claim. The language of the Dickey amendment is very concise, very price, and very clear. No funds may be used to advocate for or promote firearm-related restrictions. If an individual simply cannot tell the difference between advocacy and research, then that is ultimately on them and their own mental shortcomings.

Simply repeating the same claims and the same insults does not make them anymore factually correct than the last time they were mentioned. There is no evidence, none whatsoever, to prove conclusively that fewer individuals own firearms now than at any previous time in the history of the united states. All that is had to rely on are random telephone surveys that cannot be verified in a scientific method. All that is had is the number of individuals who are willing to admit to owning firearms, and such is not proof.

Has there ever been a point in recorded history where such was not the case?

Not through the use of legislative actions, however.

If developed nations do not have mass shootings, then the united states is simply not a developed nation, and thus is no better than the nation of Mexico.

Pertaining to their own actions, the best course of action is familiarization and safety training, no different than teaching a minor how to safely operate a motor vehicle. Pertaining to the actions of third-party individuals, the matter becomes much more difficult to address since there is no way of preventing reckless actions from being committed.

Obsession with those who have committed previous mass shootings, bordering on fanaticism and having respect for their actions and decisions to engage in such.

Why should any effort truly be made to prevent such? Simply allow them to continue killings themselves off as they see fit, as it does nothing to impact the rest of the world beyond its borders.

If you ended up in that wheelchair because the government had stripped you of your right of self-defense, you wouldn't feel very free, now would you?

I'm alive today because I had a gun to defend myself with, and my right to self-defense is an integral part of my right to life.

Which is exactly why the CDC has no business in this area.

That has to be one of the weakest arguments against the second amendment I have ever read. How free is the 95lb female against the 200lb rapist/murderer?

Hogwash. "When it comes to the number of gun-related homicides, the U.S. ranks 30th worldwide."

    https://www.pbs.org/newshour/health...king-of-gun-deaths-heres-where-the-u-s-stands

"Of the 86 countries where we have identified mass public shootings, the US ranks 56th per capita in its rate of attacks and 61st in mass public shooting murder rate. Norway, Finland, Switzerland and Russia all have at least 45 percent higher rates of murder from mass public shootings than the United States."

And if certain countries are not deliberately left out to make the U.S. look bad the graph looks like this.

Quite a difference and clearly points out how much the anti-gunners skew the facts to make a point which really doesn't exist.

We lead the world in a lot of things, how about Australia? You folks lead in anything other than most poisonous creatures per meter? Its the culmination of our freedoms that allow this, I'm not sure how lesser nations get off lecturing or whining about America instead of actually improving themselves...
