1) the "assault weapons ban" didn't ban semi auto mag fed rifles. It banned same with some cosmetic features.
2) You don't have to have a license or insurance to buy a car. Or a background check. Only to operate one on public roads. Nor do you have to pass a competency test to buy a vehicle.

The problem with school shootings is that they are not supposed to happen at all, regardless of gun restrictions... take for example countries like switzerland, they are armed yet no shootings there. Maybe the problem is actually rooted in the society rather than guns alone, which in any case should not be trusted to teenagers, even the smallest firearm should be forbidden for them.

Things like bullying, racism, mental health, social emargination should be adressed as well as gun control i think...
