As long as they can function without serious discomfort they are good. One of my Airedales almost made it to 15. The vet said 14 was a record in her practice. He was a big dog - and generally the bigger they are... Alas.

I'm sorry. Been through that myself. It's heartbreaking. We lost 3 dogs and 4 cats in 2 years once. I never imagined that they would all live to the same ripe old age. That was really hard. I'd even say it was a bit traumatic. It took a toll to be sure. When they start to go, get a puppy.

Yeah, its hard. Thx yall for the sympathy. I'll definitely be looking to replace my outside dogs since they're my security system. I live on a circle so my side gate overlooks the circle. My neighbors say they dont have to own dogs cuz mine watch over their house. This is true. They dont miss much. ;)

There is nothing so sweet as an old dog. it hurts to see them get old because they are family. Your dog getting old shows how well you treated her.

The old dogs also keep us grounded in reality. They are a good brave model for us when we have to face the reaper.

Blind, deaf and safe. That is a beautiful gift you are giving her. Special dog and a special person. Very cool.

Last night I dreamt of some bagels.

Ever notice how time speeds up or slows down just when you don't want it to? Example: Waiting for the doctor to come into the examining room seems to take forever but, a good vacation seems to go by in a flash.

There was a very clever experiment performed that tested the frame rate of our vision - how fast we process visual information. It turns out that when we experience a thrill or threat, our frame rate increases. That is apparently why during something like an auto accident, it seems like time slows down. Our brains are actually working faster in some respects.

Are you sure she is deaf? I had a dog go blind. I was warned by other blind dog owners that she would eventually seem deaf but she probably wasn't. Even the vet thought she was deaf a couple years in, but she wasn't. She just didn't respond to most noises. There were some she very clearly heard when they happened. She would come up out of a deep sleep when the other dog would yelp for instance even if she otherwise had seemed deaf for weeks or months.

She can hear a whistle, but not much else. And even though she hears it, she can't tell where it came from. She sleeps most of the time and is disoriented when she first wakes up. After a trip outside, she eats, drinks and goes back to bed. Shes 119 in human yrs. Definitely past retirement age. ;)

I was where you are two years ago. I still loved her til the end and beyond and I have no doubt she still loved me. She would still walk circles in the yard as our walks and then go back to sleep. The hardest part for me was when it got to the point I was having to help her get her butt up in the air. She did fine once she got up and going, but getting up from sitting was hard for her. I soooo dreaded the thought of ever having to have her put down. I really don't think I could have done it. Fortunately it didn't come to that. She had a massive seizure that lasted almost an hour and then died a few hours later but those hours seemed peaceful enough for her. She would drink a little and still kick her legs when I scratched her belly. She clearly had no use of her front legs at that point though. She just faded away with me laying at her side.

I have a disabled housemate, so they keep each other company. But when Im home, she stays near me and when I cook, shes right unter my feet. She hasnt lost her sense of smell or taste. And she still has a cold, wet nose. :)

Oh mine would trip me she would be so unexpectedly under foot sometimes, especially when cooking like yours does. I would go to step back and she would be right behind me and I never knew she had come up.

Well I am blown away. My new sugar baby was telling me about a song she has finally mastered on the piano. I didn't know it by name so she sent a video. But she's a little embarrassed because she can't play it quite as fast as this woman does.

I play the piano and I am in awe. She is far more accomplished than she let on.
