    Alaska 1964: Magnitude 9.2, duration, 4 minutes!

We can easily feel a 3.0 - a very small quake. A 9.2 is over 1 million times more energetic.

Your dad ran across a hot heater to save you guys. Very dad like. Cool.

Makes sense. Its not the plate movements so much as the effects of that movement on the environment. Sandy soil has a ripple effect. Probably a dispersing energy type ratio thing. Where as something solid would shake more that ripple. So if you lived in an area with sandy soil the damage would be greater than in an area with a more solid base.
I never paid much attention to earthquakes till the Loma Linda one. It was shocking to see the devastation it caused. You wonder to what extent they can build a structure to withstand the shock of a very large quake. I was struck by the construction of some homes that were being built in the area we stayed. They had some type of footings with springs in the corners.

    That was really interesting. Thanks.
Its hard to imagine you have about 3 minutes to get to higher ground if you are in a tsunami zone and feel an earthquake. They suggested start running while the quake is happening. The clock is ticking. Thing I learned about a tsunami from watching the footage of that devastating tsunami a few years back is if you are ever near the shore and the water all of a sudden goes out like some high speed change of tide, start heading for higher ground and move like you have never moved your ass before. Major water is on the way.

Yes, Tsunami zones are another matter. But imagine trying to run while that level of destruction is occurring!!! Not a situation one wants to be in. Also, this assumes that you have an "up" to which to run! :D

Note that in the video, even when the ground was heaving and displaced by a dozen feet or more, most of those homes remained relatively intact.

The Pacific Northwest is due for a subduction zone event sometime between now and the next five hundred years or so. It is possible to have up a magnitude 10. As a rule of thumb, the more time you have between periodic slips, the bigger the slip. I was in Lima Peru once and we had several quakes a day. They only worry when the quakes stop. Small quakes are relieving stress between two colliding plates.

An interesting bit of trivia: The tectonic plates are moving together and colliding at about the same rate that your fingernails grow.

I out grew her. One day, she was picking on me and I slugged her. After that, we got along a lot better. Today we are family.

No, but the liquor cabinet has reinforced walls. You know, to keep the hard drinkers outta the booze?

    This

was playing on the radio on my way home from the store. It is a madhouse out there. My fault for waiting until the last minute to go grocery shopping. Well, our guests didn't announce themselves until last night, so it is not entirely my fault. We were planning on trying out frozen pizza on the grill because we are lazy.
Now I am looking forward to making a 3 course dinner.

My MIL is 85 and her stamina for cooking is limited. It does her ego good to be able to cook once in a while. She makes a decent potato soup. We turned it into a meal by making a potato soup bar. We grilled some Ekrich sausage and fried some bacon, put out some cheese and onion and let everyone fix their own soup to taste and Maw Maw got credit. It turned out good.
