I think I read somewhere he gave up his drinking. Alcohol or not he was a very talented person. I don't think he could read music either he was just a natural talent.

Yeah, alcohol is very damaging, but Alzheimer's is not caused by drinking. I have 3 gfs dealing with spouses w/Alzheimer's. Its heartbreaking. :(

I saw his documentary (very interesting as is shows him with the disease) and, of course I fondly remember him. If he wasn't so famous for singing he would have been famous as a musician.

My grandmother has it too. It is really depressing and sad to see the change in her. At least she isn't suffering though. She seems to be caught up in her own little world most times is all, and then sometimes she seems just completely expressionless and is rather unresponsive. I'm just glad she isn't one of the more violent and difficult to control.

Sorry to hear that. :( All 3 of my friends finally had to put their husbands in care facilities when they no longer recognized them as their wife. Youre right, mostly the disease is harder on the caretaker than the patient, although one passed away after only a few months because he lost the ability to swallow. Very sad all around. :( :( :(

There are robotic lifts that can really help caretakers, and new technology is being developed fast.

“In addition to smart-home sensors and mobile robots, there are a variety of other efforts to add stationary robots to provide everything from coaching to communications to companionship.

Catalia Health, a San Francisco-based design company, has introduced theMabu personal health care companion, an interactive robot about the size of a coffeepot. The system, which has a cartoonish form, listens and speaks and holds a touch-tablet interface. It is designed to act both as a health care coach and to provide a way to stay in touch with doctor’s offices and pharmacies.

“My approach is, ‘Here are the challenges we see in health care. What is the right technology?’” said Cory Kidd, chief executive of the start-up firm. “Robots happen to be great for helping with behavior.”

A more profound question is whether robots or virtual assistants, in tandem with Internet communications, can help forestall the effects of aging, like dementia. Isolation is one of the most vexing problems for older adults, and there is evidence that human contact can postpone intellectual decline.”

yes smoking and drinking only became bad when the food changed for profits.

all of the health problems can be traced back to fake food that does not protect the mind and body anymore.

i read that it can be from aluminum in canned foods and drinks, not sure though.

everything has aluminum its hard to stay away from it, but some real foods can bind with it to carry out of the body.

So, nobody had health problems before food for profit? A likely story.

This health discussion has me depressed... When we are born most of us had to travel through the birth canal squishing the crap out of our lungs only to be swatted on the butt. We can't see much, we crap in our pants, we can't take care of ourselves and we have no teeth. We depend on others for our very life.

We grow up, live our lives then...

We slowly lose our vision, our teeth fall out, we crap in our pants and can't take care of ourselves. Then we die. Does that suck or what? Set me up another one another one Smarty. No ice this time huh?

Alzheimer's disease and cancer are too of the most devastating diseases that can happen to a family.

Definitely.....My mother died of cancer when I was 14. Our family basically disintegrated. I can't imagine the devastation of Alzheimer's where a loved one's perception of reality slowly dies. A very close friend of mine had a father who (in a car accident) suffered catastrophic brain damage. They said their father basically 'died' the night of the accident........but someone else lived on.
