Black bears are bad news - especially for people who don't know how bad they can be.

They should be good eating. The wild diet will probably make for tasty meat especially acorns and chestnuts. 10% of the boars will have tainted meat. A hot piece of metal will tell. Just brand the fat and smell. A good test for all harvested pig meat. Also take a look at the liver.

    That's for sure.

The people who used to live on our spread ran into a black bear in the backyard that had chased a cat up a tree. Try as they might they could not run that bear off - they even got in their car and blasted the horn at it but the bear just ignored them. I get the impression that a gunshot wouldn't have impressed that beast, either. Some of 'em just don't give a damn.

Its this lack of fear of people that convinced me to establish a perimeter of solar lights around our house. When there's a new moon it's so pitch black at night you can't see your hand in front of your face, much less a black bear sneaking up on you. If they're upwind they could get on you before it's too late to do anything about it. :omfg:

I wanted to wait until this little project was completed, but I couldn't. Here's the "before" picture of where my retaining wall will be. Weather permitting, it is promised to be finished by Wednesday of next week.

I'll take a wild guess and say the car was totaled?

Where I used to live in PA, we had Black Bears stroll through the yard on a regular basis.... our 2 acres backed on to 5500 acres of state game land.

Annual BBQ, and a friend who had never come up before, came into the house with eyes as big as saucers, claiming a black bear had stood in the middle of the road for 5 minutes just a 1/4 mile from the house. Yep, they do that, just because they can.

Bears, especially Grizzly have exceptional sense of smell.
    And they move faster than one imagines.I remember years ago { around 30 years }
reading a gruesome True story in Readers Digest about some Young campers
who were terrorized by a Grizzly. The Grizzly managed to storm their campsite
and take one of the Young Females. It dragged her off into the woods
somewhere and slowly tortured and ate parts of her making enough noise
the other campers could hear. They were too scared to flee camp in the dark
    of night.

A Retaining wall like on a Beachfront.Which means thick concrete
with steel rebar for reinforcement.I know this from our Summer Home on
Lake Erie.We had to replace the Retaining wall 3 times over the span of
    25 years.

I hit a young bear with the big truck. It felt like the proverbial wet bag of cement. Took out the bumper and radiator.

    Yup...

Sounds a lot like our place but the forests are owned primarily by large timber and ag firms.

LOL - The joys of being on top of the food chain...

I don't think it's Poss-Eee-Bow to make friends with most snakes.

We don't do bears in Texas. A friend's hubby went bear hunting I think in Montana? She got a beautiful bear rug outta that trip. Our peta friends were appalled. Lol

I think the reason may be as simple as Bears don't cotton
the state { of Texas }.Not nearly enough Woodland.Bears thrive in
wooded areas.Plus maybe most the food tossed-out in park trash
cans has TOO much BarbieQ slapped all over.Even stuff like tossed
out Omelets.Ya gotta admit ... Texans eat kinda dumb.
Reminded of the scene in - Giant - { 1955 } where lovely bride
Elizabeth Taylor is treated to her first official Texas Bar-b-Que.
She ended up fainting. The site of Pork Brains as a delicacy was too much.
For her Sophisticated Northern Virginian upbringing.
I wonder if she upchucked during the shooting of that scene.

This was just a small wall with bricks and rocks stacked up and cement joints. It took a while cause I stepped in a hole and messed up my knee. Should last a long time.
