And I found my pics of the pileated woodpeckers in our area. They were shot through a screened window which is why they look hazy.

One of 'em was kinda camera shy while the other one was too busy eating bugs to care...

I think one of the turkey vultures in our area built a nest up in the trees near our house but it's gone now. The top of the tree broke off during the recent ice storm.

I went back there for the first time on Sunday and I couldn't believe all the damage. I knew the pine trees took it on the chin but I was surprised to see how many hardwoods got messed up (lots of firewood for next year!). This Friday I'm finally going to finish clearing the last of the pine trees that fell into the clearings on our property.

Goodness. I don’t kill harmless snakes either but I jump first and identify from the airborne position. LOL. That would have elicited some serious hang-time for me!

    Another good photo.

Of course, we've got more than enough of these critters around:

    LOL

If I see diamond patterns I immediately freak. In our neck of the woods that usually means Copperhead.

And this is my favorite pic that I ran across in the photo vault that I shot several years ago - it's our old 140 lb. Rottweiler (RIP) checking out the deer who trespassed onto his property.

By this point in his life he was too old, too wise and too arthritic to chase after critters he knew he couldn't catch. I can just imagine what was running through his head...

Thanks - I got lucky. Those woodpeckers are about as discreet as the owls I can never manage to spot.

We've also got at least one red-bellied woodpecker living in the old white oak in our front yard (the same tree the hawk likes to perch on). They make an effort to stay out of sight but they're noisy little buggers and they have a very distinct call.

Aside from the birds of prey, my favorite birds are the cardinals and goldfinches who live around us. The goldfinches just showed up two years ago and their numbers are growing, Beautiful birds.

Get a load of this guy - I've never seen anything like it:

If you get cardinals you should get painted buntings. They were spotted as far north as Maryland this year.

I had to look that bird up. Haven't seen any here (southern Virginia) yet but I'll have to keep my eyes peeled.

My area had an Ice Storm back in 2009.I remember just before the
lights { electricity } went out in the early evening I was laying in bed and listening
to all the trees that had branches breaking off.It was almost surreal.
Hearing big tree branches break.I don't believe I'll ever forget the sound.
It took 10 days to get electricity back in my area. Some places like trailer
parks had to wait 2 weeks or longer. Some areas were both lucky and
    select.If they had underground utilities and lived in nice { expensive }
communities were granted power in mere days.Sometimes mere hours.
Is there a lesson to be learned.Yeah ... Respect Mother Nature.
Forget that Dopey song ... Respect Yerself.

Cardinals and Bluejays are pesky birds. They like to fight.
Or start sh*t.Think the Hatfields vs. the McCoys.
The Louisville Cardinals vs. the Kentucky Wildcats.
Or Don't think. See if I give a bird crap.

Sounds exactly like the ice storm we had in 2009 - I'm guessing the same system that hit you hit us.

The day after this most recent ice storm it was exactly as you described. I was out chopping firewood to keep the house warm and all day long I was serenaded by the sound of trees breaking (CRACK!!) and crashing to the ground. It was almost apocalyptic. There were so many fallen trees in the roads we literally had to cut our way out, and if we hadn't we would have been trapped here for a week. It took something like 8-9 days for the county road crews to finally reach us and by that time the job was long done.

Out here God helps those who help themselves. You don't wait for the government...

A hog nose snake will really make you say crapola, they will spread their head like a cobra. Some people call them puff adders they are harmless and will over to play dead if they feel threatened.

However Deer are extremely fleet of foot and terrific jumpers.
Over not only hill & Dale but fences, hedgerows and the occasional
passing vehicle.Deer also posess great smell and sense of movement.
Whereas a Rottweiler is very limited.Great Junkyard dogs but then
not hunters or trackers like a sporting dog.
A german dog of origin but not nearly as fast or good at
hunting as a Weimaraner. Our very first family dog was a Weimaraner.
We had to give him up because he was always getting in our
next dog neighbors bushes lining his home.I cried when we had to
let Prince go.I am an animal lover. Not too terribly known as a human
    lover.Sometimes,but don't bank on it.
Humans develop habits from other humans.Mostly that are
too full of selfishness and overt pride.Or ambitiousness that borders
    on compulsive abuse.

After Michael hit this area people started helping and clearing roads. No one waited for the government the only people we waited for were the power people. They had an enormous job getting power back on. Power poles were down everywhere. To say the least things were a mess.

You're right - Rottweilers aren't hunting dogs. They're actually herding dogs, and they'll show you their instincts if you give them the opportunity. The Ancient Romans bred them to herd and protect their cattle against wolves and then they'd haul the meat to market in carts after the cattle were slaughtered. That's how they became known as the Butcher's Dog.

While they're not as smart as a Border Collie they're really smart dogs. I taught mine how to move through fields using whistles and sign commands like you've probably seen shepherds do with other dogs. The male you saw in the picture was a dream to train but his sister was more difficult. She could be a real knucklehead when she felt like it.

Ouch - Michael was a real bad storm.

I think our electrical co-op had to replace around 300 poles. Our area was kinda fortunate in that we only had some trees fall into the lines otherwise we would have been off the grid a little longer.
