The only problem is finding some dark wood. The pallets are eithe oak, pine, poplar, and maybe sweetgum.....and skill....every square within a close tolerance.

The only problem is the finish. I used some stain on some oak on a bench top....still in progress....I have no thickness planer so all the wood is a little difference in thickness....so I can go over the assembled piece with a hand plane or sand it smooth. So it would have to be burned or stained just before applying the finish and it doesn't work out well for me.

A chess board might not be as hard as I thought. I might try it. I am retired and have time.

One thing I thought was if you use one board with a uniform thickness you could stain half of it before you cut it into squares to get around the problem of it being uneven.
Anyway, good luck I look forward to seeing the results.
I have a friend who is a top cabinet maker (who really hates being called a carpenter) and his skills are incredible. One thing he likes to do when making bespoke furniture, kitchen cupboards etc is to include little hiding places with clever opening catches. Usually without being asked to, the customers always really like it.

    Well damn that was hairy.
Had tornado warning this morning. Not exactly what you want to hear when living in a mobile home.

I did not know whether we should stay in the house or sit in my van. On one hand sitting in the van if you saw it coming maybe you could outrun it or go the other way..... Or think you could and run right into it.

Turns out none touchdown in my county but they had extensive damage in fort Myers.

Have you been to Fisheating Creek? We were supposed to be there from Thur until later today, but we left yesterday because it was looking dicey. Cold is lovely in a tent. Windy and wet is less fun.

Heard of it but no never been there.

It was damn scary weather this morning, you could see fast moving Squall lines and the weather station was saying there was rotation above our city.

I thought well this might be the day....

I’m glad we left. It’s over on that side. Closest town is Clewiston. Good to hear you are okay,

I still have to sand it after it is assembled....besides stain on a chess board is like cheating. I have some heart pine that is kinda dark. And.....your friend is a woodworker, different than a carpenter.

He tells me carpenters build houses and cabinet makers build furniture.

I found a sanctuary. My shop now has heat so I can occupy it at any time. No one goes in there but me. I CAN SNEEZE REAL LOUD. It is so nice to be able to let out an unrestricted, uninhibited, loud, @$$ sneeze.

Heading on a 10-day cruise tomorrow, to Southern Caribbean. We've been to a lot of Caribbean ports. This time, it's mostly new ports for us. Should be interesting. The boat will be around 40% passenger capacity. Everyone is required to show vaccine card and proof of negative COVID test in the last two days.

"See" you later in the month! Play nice.

I used to think a cruise would be fun.

A number of years back, I started not liking the idea so much. Stuck in a limited space, in the middle of the ocean. For days....

Airplanes are bad enough, but at least it's only a couple of hours.
