and the girl singing it was really captivating so I looked it up and it was a group called the Carpenters, Karen Carpenter I think is her name. Anyways her voice was so soothing so I googled cover bands to see if that was normal and nobody could match her sound. Anyways I listened to all of her big hits and I have to say wow, what a gem. So my question is this, are you guys hiding any more great artists like this from the younger generations?
Try the opposite end of the spectrum -- if you haven't already heard her sing -- and listen to anything by Janis Joplin. Her voice sounds like a trash compactor on steroids, but compelling nonetheless.
Wow that's really neat. Kind of like being a part of history in the making but I guess you didn't know it back then.
In a way we did. The Carpenters were HUGE. And we knew people that went to college with them at then Long Beach State. I never met them but they lived very close by. I did by chance see Karen Carpenter when she died. I was working right outside of the ER entrance on a mobile CAT Scanner [a bus with a CAT Scanner on it]. I saw her moved from the ambulance to the ER but didn't realize who she was. Then a nurse told us it was Karen. We heard shortly thereafter that she didn't make it. So sad. I wanted to cry. I think I did. I had always loved their music.
Ok, that's kinda cool and morbid at the same time. Why did she die exactly, I haven't looked that up yet. I heard someone say she didn't eat but how the hell do you become a world famous person and simply not eat. It doesn't make any sense. Didn't people notice her getting skinny? Did she get skinny?
Karen Carpenter tragically died of Anorexia. Karen Carpenter is a Legend. She is an All-Time Great. Having not "heard of her" is the equivalent of having "not heard" of Abraham Lincoln. I am overjoyed to hear that you are making a concerted attempt to increase your cultural literacy. I wish you all the best.
Yeah well, I don't know everything. I like to research and expand my horizons and by doing that I often find things that I guess are common knowledge but this was way before my time, I don't hear her on radio or on CD's so I was never exposed to it. I am sure there are many things I don't know but that is part of the fun of exploring isn't it? And no, as good of a singer as she was she was not comparable to Lincoln. You must have really liked her? Did you dance to her while you were rollerskating?
Karen was also a Great Drummer. Yet, another lesson on Karen Carpenter (to increase the collective cultural literacy of PF). Let it never be said that the Legend ("PF's Andrew Jackson") didn't share his Epic Knowledge. Karen on The Drums: As Always, You're Very Welcome.
