So WHY did God create Man and the Universe?

Jesus had just told Philip that, "I am the Truth,... the way and the life" when Philip said what you said, too.

So Jesus explained it in more detail as follows:

no man cometh unto the Father, (Reality), but by me.

7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father, (Reality), also: and from henceforth ye know him, (Reality), and have seen him, (Reality).

9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I, (Truth), been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip?
He that hath seen me, (Truth), hath seen the Father, (Reality); and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father, (Reality),?

10 Believest thou not that I, (Truth), am in the Father, (Reality), and the Father, (Reality), in me?
The words that I speak unto you, I speak not of myself: but the Father, (Reality), that dwelleth in me,...

11 Believe me that I, (The Truth), am in the Father, (Reality), and the Father, (Reality), in me:

 

God did say he does "stuff"...

Isa 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.

If one does NOT believe in Truth he can not know Reality.

Then he will not live in Reality.

In the context of the discussion it's when people do good deeds with the idea
that they'll earn salvation. Some people believe if their good out weights the
bad then they get to go to Heaven.

Good deeds and following the commands is what "works" is. It does not have to be with the intent of salvation. In general, living a good life. Works can also be expressed as a lack of doing bad things. "Judge not lest ye be Judged"

Do unto others as you would have them do to you is another example. If you don't want others to kill you then do not kill others aka "the golden rule"

These four sources' authors were willing to die over their testimonies. I'm sure that the author of your book doesn't want to die for his inaccuracy.
Further, historians have analyzed these books extensively and conclude that they are not fairy tales.
