Well, if men made better health decisions and ate more salad, then it would all work out. Also, the amount you get for SS depends on how much money you earned, so men will get more yearly. Plus, men are usually married to women so it all works out for both. Remember that when the program started, the minimum wage was two years above life expectancy, and the program wasn't only just solvent but doing extremely well.

Why is there a problem with the miltary guy getting his pension. At 5000 grand a month your friend was an 06 a navy Captain or a full bird Colonel with 26 years of service after he got his degree at 22YO. The most a enlisted man can get is $3800 as and E9 with 30 if he joined at 18. What do you want him to get $500 a week?

There is nothing wrong with what he receives I just think SS should be more than it is.

President GW Bush had the best plan of all.

    Democrats killed it.

Increased benefits for a program that will collapse due to unfunded increases? Democrats are idiots it then what’s new?

Medicare is in worse shape but SS is next.

    4) Add 3% to the capital gains tax to be directed to the SS trust fund and let the investment class start paying their share.

You understand that corporations are already paying half?

But to your point Capital gains should be taxed like any other income- money earned is money earned.

SS can not survive for long and it should be fixed. I think everybody under 45 should be removed from the program and guaranteed a income of 1.5 of the poverty limit when they retire. And let them save the 7% SS contribution in a 401K or what ever investment they wish.

I suspect that McConnell will just let it die on the shelf because he doesn't have the cojones to face down the Wall Street Casino Bosses.

That will be used by the Dems in 2020 to push for change in the Senate.

Depends on who is in the Whitehouse. Someone with Bill Clinton's ability to negotiate compromises might be able to get something done in those circumstances.

if the corps payed people more, they could have money for retirement, many Americans barley make enough to survive and are one major illness away form bk... if the government did not help these people they would be disabled and on the street

both sides should find things they both agree on and forget their pet projects if they do not have full control, cause not gonna happen unless you give the other side something they want

example, the bipartisan budget bill - both sides agreed on that

then Trump tried to add his pet project to it... without being willing to give dems one of their pet projects - sorry Trump, the all republican Congress is gone, elections have consequences...

Many don’t seem to understand that minimum social security benefit is under $1000 per month. I personally know one person who gets that in retirement. From that you need to pay for Medicare and copays if you have to go to a doctor.
Even if you live in a paid off house, utilities and property taxes will eat a large share of that benefit. If you move to a condo - you’ll have association fees on the top of that.

Even if the retiree was a lifelong lazy loser, society should keep that person off the streets - a retirement that provides enough for some minimum dwelling, clothing, food and healthcare is a must. I live in Chicago suburb and my estimated absolute minimum for survival is around $2,000.

Those who complain about taxing the rich need to realize that in a way, they buy their safety with pensions and prevent violent upraisings and riots among the poor.
Social Security can be easily fixed - raise the ceiling on the tax, I’d up it to at least $1M, and tax capital gains as regular income.
And stop the borrowing from the Social Security fund!

Well for one my mother has not gotten a cost of living increase in SS for several years. Like I said I have no problem with my cousin getting 5k a month from the gov't, I just think SS needs to be increased.

Cost of living increases are tied to...the cost of living. It's not a special bonus.

Special bonus? Cost of living increases are supposed to be a part of SS. Special bonus? The recipients have paid into the system their entire lives. This isn't a handout.

Based on the above comment, I don't think you understand what a cost of living increase is for.

It's to adjust for inflation. What is there to understand?

Then if the cost of living hasn't gone up per the formula, why are you wanting more money for a "cost of living?"

There is no "formula". Democrats fund SS and Republicans cut SS. Same as it ever was.

OK, so my original guess, that you didn't understand what a cost of living benefit was, is correct.

Cost of living increases in SS are supposed to mimic inflation. It does not seem to happen under Republican leadership.

    Now we're getting somewhere!

You think about your statement for a bit. I'm sure the answer will come to you.
