Some increase is necessary to pay for social security and Medicare no matter 'whut' we call it. We also need an increase to pay down the deficit or we will be up shts creek without a paddle.

I have the same problem and I am retired. We need a tax increase to keep social security and Medicare alive for our retirees. I paid in all my working life.

The population is older and enjoys better health longer in life
parallel to the decrease in cigarette use.

Shall we give smokers the old 65 retirement age and not the new improved 72?

like the other poster, do you claim you made over 100k a year of rover 35 years and only get 1600.00, if that is true you must of retired at 62 rather then waiting until the full retirement age

I do agree, increase the tax cap, do not raise the retirement age

And the republican M.O. is to cut tax revenue(see tax cuts of 2017) then scream "see! We told you we can't afford social programs!". It's maddening that people can't or won't see through the ruse.

That is the best idea yet.
Klingon Care, The old and sick should die as they are no longer capable of glorious deeds

Seriously, it's the Soylent Green Health and Pension Plan with most of them. What gets me is who they try selling it to, they do rallies for ending old age benefits in retirement villages, and it works. Madness

Yes, and I retired at 62 thinking that social security was in trouble and I should get in before it was too late. I think that it is a 'gimmy' that the retirement age will be increased.

actually Americans life span is now decreasing due to the governments low fat, high carb recommendations the last 30 to 40 years - talk about a failed experiment and now they are showing the reduction in birth rate may also be being caused by these new diet recommendations

the oldest person to have ever lived was a smoker.. when a non-smoker takes that title you can make that claim

I guess one could also claim that as smoking rates have gone done, obesity rates have soared ;)

you could not make it until 65, what makes you think others will make it to 72?

you should of waited if your health was up to it... Republicans scared you into retiring early, that is sad

    70 for Moi.

Is there an option of 72 now, confirmed?

Don't a lot of Euro countries, especially the bankrupt ones like Greece
have a low retirement age? Like 55.

Social Security + Private Pension :)

If you read it on Wiki, It must be true I was wrong about Greece, sorry @Jeannette
Sri Lanka is age 58. I wonder how many people make it to 58 in Sri Lanka

We do need to raise the retirement because the program cannot function well and ensure a healthy retirement when the ratio of payers to beneficiaries is 1 to 2. Whether or not people paid in doesn't change the fact that the program is in trouble and it needs practical solutions.

don't worry, the dems will declare a national emergency to save Social security when needed, no need to raise the retirement age to 72

it's just a hump we need to get over as the boomers are now retiring, we should of not gave out so many IOU's when they were paying in, time to raise the ss tax caps on the rich

When people are starving is when you have revolutions and then it is the wealthy who wonder what happened to their own "safety net" since they are on the receiving end of all the misery and pain they have caused to others.

Exactly, if you think life's hard for the poor try viewing the world while hanging from a lamppost.
