In the 1970s and 80s the world was full of bad countries. there was the Soviet Union, with its 17 captive countries, puppet governments and worldwide aggression. There was China with forced labor, religious persecution and forced abortions. There was Castro’s Cuba, sending his prisoners to the US. There was Pol Pot and Idi Amin, killing thousands for no apparent reason. There were South American dictators, bolstered by the drug trade. There were right-wing dictatorships, supported by the US but full of corruption. there was the arab world oppressing women and severe justice.

South Africa was different. The western world felt they were nice people, who realized apartheid was wrong but feared they would be killed, exiled or at least reduced to dire poverty if it ended. The world ignored most of the other countries, and shamed South Africa, the nice people, into doing the right thing.
