“For Jews, all life is precious and thus the decision to bring new life into the world is not taken lightly or determined by state fiat,” the lawsuit said. “In Jewish law, abortion is required if necessary to protect the health, mental or physical well-being of the woman, or for many other reasons not permitted under the act [the new law]. As such, the act prohibits Jewish women from practicing their faith free of government intrusion and thus violates their privacy rights and religious freedom.”

quite a pickle for red states…religious freedom is pretty well established. Does the states right also trump a clearly enumerated right like the first amendment protection of religious freedom? Might see a lot of women converting in red states, just in case!

15 weeks? That's more lenient than most of Europe. Will the heavily oppressed women of France be fleeing to Florida to get an abortion in the 15th week?

Why should anyone have to leave their state to practice their faith?

It is a novel approach, but it is a loser, speaking from a strictly logical, objective perspective. Not that I am saying that I do not have my own p.o.v., on the topic, but I think it not difficult to evaluate this claim, in a detached way, w/out need of bias. To wit: the rationale promoting a cutoff threshold for abortion , is based on the state's considering the fetus, after 15 weeks, in this case, as something akin to a human being. So this argument should be no more successful than saying that it is one's religious belief to be able to eat small children; religious freedom is, for the most part, only considered to to apply to activities that, separate from any laws regarding religious practice, are intrinsically legal acts. One cannot expect to be permitted to light others' homes on fire, for instance, because this is part of their "religion."

Just a quick clarifier: I do not see abortion, within the Roe timeline, as tantamount to eating a child or torching someone's home. Though, like most Americans, I do not believe in an unlimited right to abortion, any time before giving birth, either.
Nonetheless, nor do I support the forcing of a woman to carry a fetus to term, which she would prefer to abort, within a reasonable timeframe. While my own personal preference would not stretch beyond the halfway point of gestation, 20 weeks, I also realize that it is not my right to make this determination, for all women. That said, I think society, if it so chooses, has justifiable precedent, to rule out third trimester abortions-- except, of course, in special circumstances. By this, I mean a threat to the life or health of the mother, or a late-discovered, serious birth defect; not the special circumstance, of being Jewish.

No problem. The SCOTUS decision is the law of the land. These folks are simply in the same boat as Catholics were under the draconian Roe v Wade.

Gee yes what a conundrum. If your religion requires human sacrifice, genital mutilation, throwing gays from the tops of building or stoning adulterers, we must allow it mustn't we? In what realm of reality does the left live where they believe this kind of thinking makes a shred of sense? If these people want to butcher their own kids, no problem, move to New York or California where you can kill the kid up to 9 months. Nice job filing a lawsuit when we have a Supreme Court all ready and set to deny it.... rational people would have waited for a Supreme Court that was on their side.

Well hell my faith says we need to be teaching Christianity in schools.

    So that’s cool right?

They aren't at all. Catholics under Roe were not deprived of anything. Religious people of any faith who have a problem with abortion were not losing anything. They have also gained nothing with Roe overturned. They don't even have a horse in this race, because they're probably not the type of folks who were going to get an abortion, nor am I assuming they were profiting from abortion either. They also gain nothing from abortion being prohibited, in the states where it inevitably will be, because the only thing to gain from outlawing abortion is more babies. And while there are many on the right who genuinely do care about the lives of children, the politicians they support do not. The polices they enact do not.

And that's one of the truly sad things about this. They had nothing to gain and were not losing anything and still they couldn't let people other than them make their own decisions.

This would be a separate issue from general access to abortion. The Court just decided in the football coach case that religion is super important. They've handed down decisions that respect religious liberty for years. The only problem here is, the plaintiffs aren't the right religion, which is not at all to say that the right-wing SCOTUS judges are anti-semitic, they're just exclusively pro-Christianity.

You can be free to move(as in you are not prohibited, not that you have the means) and be deprived of the ability to do something you previously had the ability to do....at the same time.

Meh, no one is depriving them of anything. They might as well bring a lawsuit for bank robbers as well. Bank robbers are deprived of the money they steal.

Abortion is not part of their religion.
