South Korea fires warning shots at Russian warplanes

    By HYUNG-JIN KIM Associated Press
    July 22, 2019 — 10:55pm

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korean jets fired warning shots after a Russian military plane violated South Korea's airspace on Tuesday, Seoul officials said, in the first such incident between the countries.

Three Russian military planes initially entered South Korea's air defense identification zone off its east coast before one of them entered the country's territorial sky, the South's Defense Ministry said.

South Korean fighter jets then scrambled to the area to fire warning shots, a ministry official said, requesting anonymity due to department rules.

The Russian plane left the area but it returned and violated the South Korean airspace again later Tuesday, the ministry official said. He said the South Korean fighter jets fired warning shots again. Each time, the Russian plane didn't return fire, the official said.

The Russian aircraft only flew over the remote islets between Japan and South Korea. The Russian aircraft allegedly flew too close to the islets of Dokdo and breached South Korean airspace twice for about three minutes.

The islets of Dokdo or Liancourt Rocks are also claimed by Japan and South Korean airspace may actually be Japanese airspace. The disputed islets, called Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in South Korea, are located roughly 200 kilometers from either country.

Either way, it's an odd place for Russians to be doing incursions, isn't it?

I suppose. I wonder if South Korea similarly probes Russian defenses. I expect our forces do, but theirs?

I wish it weren't so. I want political discussion to return to sanity. Things started getting crazy in the Bush years, it seems, and worsened in the Obama years. Let's reverse that.

It looks like planes from 4 countries were involved - Japan, South Korea, China and Russia.
I don’t remember things like that happening in the past.

Seems that Russia and S. Korea have different views of the airspace the bombers were flying in. Russia says it is international, and S. Korea says it belongs to them.

    This is from RT:

Rejecting the JCS accusations that the Tu-95s breached South Korea’s air defense identification zone (KADIZ), Russia said there are no international regulations that stipulate the existence of these areas.

Moscow does not recognize them either, “which was repeatedly communicated to the South Korean side through various channels.” At the end of the mid-air encounter, the South Korean jets fired flares and went away, the ministry stated.

Moscow also denied reports that “warning shots” were fired at the Tu-95s. If that was the case and the Russian pilots considered themselves in danger, there would have been “an answer” to that.

Not really, if it's a shorter route - or maybe the only route to a destination.

Seems to me the Russian bombers were making a statement about the waters being international, and didn't want S. Korea making a precedence of the space belonging to them - something that seems to be a point of contention between S. Korea and Japan.

Eventually Russia is going to play chicken with the wrong country and get hurt....I wonder if that is what Putin wants.
