SpaceX wants to surround Earth with an internet service that's 200 times faster.

    LINK...http://www.sciencealert.com/spacex-...nternet-service-200-times-faster-than-average

SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by the Mars-hungry tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, just made a big move to enshroud the planet in high-speed internet coverage.

On November 15, the company filed a lengthy application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch 4,425 satellites. (We first heard about the filing through the r/SpaceX community on Reddit.) That is a hell of a lot of satellites.

That really is is a HELL of a LOT of satellites!!

Just wait until China complains that they can't censor the internet and put up firewalls. It might just leave space-x open to litigation.

You know it's about time someone did this and broke the cable companies hold on expensive internet access!!

This will allow internet access at 200 times faster than the current fastest access available and it will break the damn monopoly the cable companies have on internet access!!

I think this is huge especially for 3rd world nations that do not have the infrastructure for such wide access internet availability.

Actually a TON is an understatement perhaps 1000 Tons?

    LOL!!

But still it will be nice to just be able to matter where you are take a tablet or laptop as I HATE using my phone as it is too small for my fingers.....and just sit down ANYWHERE and use the internet!!

be nice to have a cable bill that was much more reasonable and this could do that...

course like the land line and pay phones they could be hard to get too... then we are more at risk then ever from a solar storm

    hopefully we always have both....

They could make it illegal but they could not stop access.

    - - - Updated - - -

I agree and I think they were saying it would cost only $2.75 a month to have access.

    That is cheap!!

The war on drugs was quite possibly the biggest waste of money ever!!

In Massachusetts we have already decriminalized POT and now we just voted to legalize it and it passed.

I personally do not smoke anything as I run but people in Mass. will be able to LEGALLY grow your own!!

Plus it will be legal to buy and sell.

As soon as something like this becomes LEGAL.....the criminals realize they can no longer make money doing it thus crime is lowered and so is the problem!!

At 10 million a satellite that is 44, 250,000.000. A big amount but feasible, at 100,000,000 it's 442 billion, which I think is too large for private concerns, even a consortium.

Now since the best estimates I can get off Google place the cost of launching one satellite at 50 to 400 million I have to wonder at the feasibility of this idea.

However there is something callled a CubeSat which is MUCH cheaper. It is also, unfortunately much smaller than a regular satellite BUT it is possible, or at least I think it should be, that a functioning relay could be made that small. The Telstar, surprisingly, had only a FIVE WATT amplifier if memory serves, and yet could handle a large enough volume that only a few were necessary for worldwide coverage; and there have been great advances in satellite tech since Telstar was used.

I hope it can be done as cheaply as they say. My Internet bill is murder and it goes out every time the wind blows.

AA has a point, this whole thing could be financed even at the highest price, with the amount we spend on the "war on drugs", possibly the most oppressive and undemocratic thing any country on earth is engaged in.

Yeah it really is stupid the whole..."War on Drugs!"

    Idiotic.

The sad thing is that in some states kids are doing long and hard time for being arrested with a single joint!!

In Mass. we decriminalized it first as we understood that people being arrested for pot as far as those people who were arrested for possession were non-violent and they just clogged up the courts.

Now we have LEGALIZED IT and we look forward to the Tax revenue as we will tax it's sale as well as tax commercial growers and sellers and I happen to KNOW that up at UMASS and HAMPSHIRE COLLEGE two of the best in the WORLD agricultural schools as UMASS although not strictly just an agricultural school has a world renown program as far as hydroponics...etc....

....well pot grows in Mass REALLY WELL!!

    lol!!!

    Well yes of course!!

    LOL!!

Thing is although I personally do not smoke pot or anything other than the 1 or 2 cigars I smoke a year and I do not inhale those.....I certainly would not try to deny people their right to smoke pot now that it is legal and people who do smoke in moderation have no issues as with anything moderation is key!!

Well I hope they can do a better job than HughesNet :roflol: The same internet satellites that the U.S. military is dependent on.

Anyone who is using HugesNet knows what I'm talking about or any sailor who has served on a ship at sea.

The big question is, will Space-X charge 4 X more for the same internet service as the cable ISP's ?

Will Space-X charge the western civilized industrial people to subsidize internet service to the uncivilized third world like we see with pharmaceutical drugs ?

    No.

You are my techie guy Above Alpha. I pay attention what you post on techie things than others.

You have pretty well established yourself on the PF Military Form knowing your (*)(*)(*)(*) about high tech (*)(*)(*)(*).
But I still stand by that the Iowa class BB was the most awesome battle platform ever developed and deployed.

Well obviously I agree the Iowa Class is without a doubt the most survivable ship even constructed.

But remember I am not Military.

They have given us rides to where we need to go.

It's nice for being able to get your internet wherever you are.
But the internet speeds today are not really a problem. We don't really need more speed.
In the other hand I can imagine that pure satellite based internet will have much better routing and latency which is nice for communication type of applications.

Edit: Was just thinking that it's not so obvious to have decent internet everywhere in the world and how satellite internet will solve this problem. So I guess it will change a lot for many households.

There may be evil people, but I have a friend on the board at GM and I disagree that most companies are evil.

They don't sit there and twiddle their fingers hoping to hurt people. It's all numbers at that level

Usually the problems come from employees that want to make their job quicker or earn a few more bucks, so they twist their own regulations to push forward.

Then of course you are correct, there are he Maddofs and such out there, but I refuse to believe that a majority are "evil" as such
