The central government in Madrid says the breakaway region's referendum is illegal.

Spanish national police have stormed ministries and buildings belonging to Catalonia's regional government to put a stop to the region's independence referendum.

The Guardia Civil, which acts with the authority of Madrid's interior ministry, is searching for evidence regarding the planned 1 October referendum on Catalan independence, which Spain's Constitutional Court has declared illegal.

In the early hours of the morning armed officers arrived at various Catalan ministries, including the economy department, foreign affairs department, and social affairs department, Spanish media reports.

At least twelve Catalan officials are said to have been arrested, including the chief aide to Catalonia's deputy prime minister, Josep Maria Jové. The arrests come as the mayors of Catalan towns who back the referendum were yesterday questioned by state prosecutors.

Pro-independence crowds have formed outside the regional ministries in support of the provincial government and in protest against the raids and searches.

Speaking at lunchtime Carles Puigdemont, the president of the Catalonian government, said the Spanish government had “de facto suspended” home rule in the province.

Catalonia’s elected autonomous regional government, the Generalitat, had called the referendum after pro-independence parties were able to form an administration following elections in 2015.

The president of the province's national assembly, Jordi Sànchez, on Wednesday morning called for "peaceful resistance" to the police operation.

“The time has come. We resist peacefully. We come out to defend our institutions with non-violence,” he said in a post on social media.

On Tuesday police searched for election material including ballot boxes, voting papers and campaign leaflets - raiding private courier companies in the process.

The Spanish national assembly on Wednesday rejected a motion to support the Spanish government's heavy-handed response to the the referendum by 166 votes against to 158 in favor, after the centre-left opposition party PSOE teamed up with left-wingers Podemos and smaller separatist parties in the parliament.

After news of the raids broke on Wednesday, separatist political parties, as well as Podemos, cancelled all their planned political events for the rest of the day.

"It is unacceptable for there to be political prisoners in a European democracy. The Partido Popular leads us to an authoritarian regression that cannot be tolerated," a spokesperson for Podemos said on social media.

Right-wing parties however endorsed the police operation. Ciudadanos leader Albert Rivera said he supported the raids because the Catalan government had “skipped the law and are trampling our rights”. A spokesperson for the ruling Partido Popular said that “the rule of law is stronger than those outside the law”.

Catalonia's provincial government is a broad church of separatist parties from the left and right, ranging from the left-wing Republican Left of Catalonia to the centre-right Democratic Convergence of Catalonia.

I believe Brussels instructed Spanish authorities.
EU will not allow another country to get referendums or independence after Brexit happened.

Another point to consider is that Spain has five provinces with local languages. It could spark a fragmentation.

    Catalonia will not get independence.

If the people want it, they will have it.

It may cost the lives of many a thousand but that's the price to be paid.

Well, if you want to see anti-democratic raids, violated human rights, political arrests without any trials or trials that are completely politically motivated, massive repression of freedom of speech, and all that, take a look at Turkey - best example.
The Kurds in Northern Iraq talk about a referendum and Turkey send tanks to its own borders.
    Paranoia par excellence.

For once I agree with you.

Neither Madrid nor Brussels has any business telling Catalonians what they can or cannot do.

    I like Cumulus. It's fluffy.

This non-Russian friend is more than happy to give you a patronizing lecture - Cumulus included on the house - about why the Spanish government actions are perfectly compatible with a functional democracy. In fact, any democracy would have to do the same in the given circumstances.

Let's take a trip down the memory lane (yes, cliches really work sometimes), back to 1978:
What have we learned in this fascinating trip? Well, Spain not only gained a new improved constitution in 1978 - yay! - but said constitution was approved by popular referendum with a whopping majority.

Back to the future: according to your own source, the Spanish Constitutional Court has declared the planned independence referendum illegal. Why? Because of the constitution that was voted by a majority in 1978. Let's have a look:
On one side, you have an article about "indissoluble unity" and "indivisible homeland" in the constitution voted by a majority of Spanish citizens in 1978. On the other side, you have a call for an unconstitutional referendum on an unconstitutional issue. Doesn't take a genius to figure out which side is right.

The way to independence for Catalans goes not through an unconstitutional referendum on leaving the Spanish nest, but through a constitutional referendum to change the constitution in order to allow regional referendums for independence.

What kind of jackass's votes for a rule of law, that says "once entered, none may exit"

    That's suicide.

67% of population voting may be high by USA standards but its far from overwhelming majority.

    Who counted these "Votes" ?

Lets see the breakdown of what provinces voted yes, and no. I have a feeling some one got screwed like always.

Either way, to bad, you voted for that Constitution, your problem, deal with it or have civil war.
Don't ask us for help, you made your bed, now lie, die, or fight in it.

They should be feeling lucky as we just sent in few tanks up the border crossings. We might as well be sending in proxies to take the head of Barzo just like America's proxies took Gaddafi's. We are fully capable of doing much worse than that. All it takes is US sending more weapons to illegal PKK free of charge... We eventually hush it all up...

We got a saying here: "the courage of the ignorant". We use that to describe the comfort the ignorant has. Anyways, you proved in our ongoing discussion that you don't know what democracy means. All you did was to try sellin me the rule of majority as democracy. SoboManda type of brain dead chimpanzees would buy it faster than Sebastian Vettel messing up with the Ferrari engine... I aint...

I see you don't even see because in order to see you first need to acknowledge that Catalunia has not ever been a subject to a 35 year long bloody terrorist activities that were specially designed for weakening the state from within while fueling separatist arguments against the Spanish people and state both of whom are indispensable parts of what forms a true state. So you better do your apples and oranges thing under some meaningless Bundesmuchi threads you can find on LN forum because that's probably where your points make some good sense... Not round here son...

And Panturk is not something edible by the way. I know political terms and descriptions don't come with no warning signs on them so I'm just doing a favor. Overuse or use without knowing what they are can cause serious brain damages. Better not to touch...

    Cheers...

Southern states approved of the Constitution and have been a part of the Union since it was created. Catalonia existed for centuries before Spain did, the people there are different ethnically from the Castillian and Aragonese as they can trace much of their ancestry to Carthage, and speak a different language that existed before Spanish was created. BIG difference.

Interesting that you feel the need to reply to something that I didn't talk about at all. Next time do me a favour and reply to something that you actually read and not to what you think you've read - this is really boring. Maybe you should take your silly accusations and phoney arguments to the next playground and play your high horse games there with someone else. Doesn't impress me in any way. And that brain damage nonsense is exactly that - nonsense. I'm familiar with the wolf symbol in Turkey.
