Poorer communities should undergo a "dramatic reduction" in police as an alternative to mass incarceration, Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., argued on Thursday.

Bowman, a new member of the progressive "Squad," made those comments on CNN when anchor Dana Bash had asked him whether "defund the police" was "bad messaging."

"Defund the police does not mean abolish the police," Bowman said. "It means a dramatic reduction in the number of police in our poor communities and particularly our poor Black and Brown communities."

"So, we're focusing on this slogan – 'defund the police' – but where are the resources to bring jobs into our communities? Where are the resources to fully fund our public schools? Where are the resources to deal with the issue of housing and food insecurity? We’re not talking about any of that. We're worried about a slogan."

OK; I do not question the intelligence and smarts of the newest member of the squad - the fact that the squad embraced him, speaks for itself.

I also do not question the intelligence and smarts of most elected Democrats, who only half-heartedly and cautiously counsel their constituencies to tone down their calls to get rid of Police.

So, according to the honorable Congressman, if the crime is rising in these poor neighborhoods, the answer is to reduce the police there? If that logic is right, let's completely eliminate the police and Crime too will disappear, right?

The Squad... the few, the proud, the cream of the Democratic crop!!!

It’s an issue of resources. The idea being every dollar to a cop is a dollar not spent on things to improve the community. As you pointed out, current police funding isn’t reducing crime.

Uhm... and reducing police funding does not increase crime?

Must not or why would trump try to cut it in his budget?
There’s views that say if you put that funding to other areas, that could reduce crime.

    Pretty much!
The detachment from reality is strong among the Democrats.
Silence is violence and looting is not. Combatting crime by reducing police presence sounds like a sound policy to me!

Heres again what your fella Democrat is saying:

Defund the police does not mean abolish the police," Bowman said. "It means a dramatic reduction in the number of police in our poor communities and particularly our poor Black and Brown communities."

What he saying is we don’t need police in poor communities.

    Amen.

This is why Republicans, as much as I dislike them too, are taking the US House in 2022. People are rejecting these far left utopian nightmares.

I hope 'the Squad' gets their wish and the police are removed....

And then after these criminals, rioters, arsonists, looters, and gutter-snipes kill each other off, maybe the places they've infested for decades can be made fit to live in again.

Sounds more like lunacy to me but hey! If I was a Democrat, I’d probably agree with the newest member of the squad o_O

The left likes to engineer societies. There is no downside to this policy - either things get better in ghetto neighborhoods of large cities, or those people will just kill each other off, releasing land in pristine locations of their cities by residents pretty much giving it away for free while fleeing the violence. Think of Chicago - 2/3 of the city is pretty much ghetto. You can already buy houses there for less than $20k, so if this policy fails the houses will probably cost less than $1,000 on the south side of Chicago - perfect price to buy for demolition and redevelopment.

The police are the ones protecting the criminals from the ones who own guns and do not like criminals.

Bet that he comes from a privileged background; but in any event evidently he is unaware that the people who most often call the police for either protection or help . . . are . . . Blacks.

He clearly said less, not none. We have lots there now, is crime wiped out?

So his logic is if there are less police to arrest criminals, there will be less crime.

    Lol

Pretty odd youd act like he wants no cops when he was pretty clear otherwise.

No his logic is more investment in job, education and less poverty will result in less crime. Why comment if you can’t read the short OP?

He ISN'T a "Congressman", he is a Rep -Elect.

    US Representative-elect Jamaal Bowman

Why are you posting FAKE News and referring to him as a Congressman?

You should research your "sources" better next time.:bored:

Anyway, as to the implication of the OP:

    Who cares what he says?

He does not represent the mainstream of the Dem. Congressional Caucus.

Referring to him as a "Congressman" BEFORE he is sworn in? :roflol:

Because it doesn’t work. We’ve thrown billions at the war on poverty and it’s only gotten worse. Less police in these areas will only mean more crime.

Liberals always have the wrong answer. Their solution to crime is more crime. Their solution to racism is more racism, etc....

Yes indeed, but first, the police must leave and the money spent on police be used for the social programs.

Sure, wanna bet that a dramatic reduction in police presence will lead to a dramatic reduction in crime?
