So I watched the first episode of Star Trek Discovery that aired on CBS Sunday night and signed up for CBS All Access streaming service and watched the second episode this afternoon. My thoughts:

A lot of go grrrl nonsense in this show. In one scene the Captain and First Officer, both female, beam onto a Klingon ship and win a hand to hand tussle (at least initially) with a couple of Klingons. I know this is science fiction but come on!

In the build up to the show the look of the Klingons is so different from any earlier look of that species that the producers had to explain that Klingons were a very diverse race and there were many types of Klingons. So in a scene that showed the heads of all the Klingon houses, they all looked the same, the new version. Why not just do a different alien species if you want a new look? Not sure I get that. It definitely breaks canon.

So ehhh we'll see how it goes. As a long time Star Trek fan, I want to see what they do with this but I'm not hopeful that they will do anything....entertaining. I guess I'll know by the time we get to the Mirror Universe episode. If they screw that up...

I will say the one thing I liked about this show, I can say one good thing about this, I like the Science Officer on the ship, that's it his species is neat and he was a good follow the rules kind of character.

    Other than that!

The ship's looked too high tech this was supposed to be before TOS by a decade so that means well looking like the original Enterprise inside.

The Klingons well didn't TOS Klingons were the only ones the Starfleet knew about which were normal people looking cosmetically and yes warriors. But when did they have coffins on the outer hull of their ships. When did they get cloaking devices which is a Romulan technology newly developed in TOS period. And they look horrid now and not in a way that is forgivable.

When did Spock's father have a daughter with a clearly dark skinned human woman he would at this point been older, married and Spock would be likely around and di Vulcan's have affairs on spouses normally? If not WTF!

Enterprise at least TRIED to make the ships look like they were older I wasn't a fan of that either finding meeting the Klingons a bit much early on and they looked like Klingons post TOS but well it was more forgivable the show was decent enough.

And they have the gall to ask for money for this mess, I won't give them a dime, but might catch it on free alternative options for people who don't want to pay to see the latest media.

Maybe you are underestimating the intensity of progressivism that a current year Star Trek would demand. My guess is that the two "women" who kicked the Klingons' asses are, in fact, in possession of balls bigger than James T Kirk's. The twist of the season will be when it is revealed that they are trannys.

I heard earlier today that the new Klingons are supposed to symbolize Trump voters somehow. Well, obviously they won't be the honorable TNG Klingons; back to pure villiany.

Maybe the mirror universe could be the original pre-Kek universe (the timeline where Trump lost the election).

How do they plan for this to work if the Star Trek base are having issues I liked DS9 and some fans hated it but it didn't make huge waves and Enterprise had issues the base largely supported it and even the new movies had some decent base support but this series is asking too much IMHO.

I am fine with the ships being more advanced looking than the TOS ships although I still think the Discovery is fugly as hell.

Why does Mike look and sound like a woman?

Why did they have to kill the sort of hot Asian chick, now there isn't any eye candy.

I HATE the Klingons. I ****ing absolutely despise them. They gave them cloaking technology which was discovered by the Romulans first not the Klingons. They make them talk like mentally disabled people and you have to wonder how a species that takes so freaking long to say something manages to come up with all this amazing tech which begs the question....how the hell did this species which puts coffins on their ships and still uses stone in the construction of their space stuff manage to get this advanced?

I think you may be on to something. The normal Star Trek Universe is the one where Hillary wins, leading to the Gene Roddenberry-esque communist federation future, and the Trump wins universe, is the one that leads to the Terran Empire.

We are the mirror universe! Better start growing a goatee.

Well the first officer was Spock's fathers human ward but she attended the Vulcan Science Academy I call BS on that hell Spock barely got in and he was half-human. But it makes her presence make some more sense.

oh stop overthinking and just go with it... that 's what Star Trek is all about.
I watched the first two episodes on Netflix last night and if the two women bother you, then it should make you happy that one ends up dead and the other in jail for life lol. Besides if you can accept the existence of all that Tech and non-garden variety aliens then certainly you can handle two women bringing down a Klingon (Loooove the Klingons... they're so bad )

Everything is supposed to be different since the reboot of the universe.

Except that it was racist because of course the black person is the one that ends up being the criminal.

For one episode, it was pretty cool and a neat, fresh take on the Star Trek universe. The Klingons were certainly unique looking but I've always been used to them having some hair on their heads.

But I hated having to go to CBS all-access to see the next one.

Just the fact that they advertised that was off-putting.

I have no hopes for this or any other new Trek. I've tossed it onto the "zombie franchise not allowed a dignified end due to corporate greed" pile with Dr. Who, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Robocop, Terminator, and whatever else gets terrible sequels, remakes and reboots.

Better to get into older foreign movies and shows at this point than follow modern American shows and cinema. Best stuff is from the twentieth century, by and large.

I don't know the Kingsman sequel was better than the first one and if they keep up the high quality and top acting talent coming in and make it what my dad likes whose 82 a solid not too complicated plot movie just a good action popcorn movie this could be a good multi-movie franchise it gives me some hope. But I still favor low budget independent efforts like Iron Sky to keep up the art of the film. Not that I mind fun movies which are only meant to be fun and toss out ones brain if needed to just let the movie be fun. But it seems too many franchises can't even do that anymore.

This series might do well due to young fans liking it but I don't see the charm, while the Orville got panned by critics but seems to have the fun factor with seriousness to keep its edge I hope but I like it, like the Good Place and other shows but it has to for me hit the right buttons if that makes sense and I don't get that with Star Trek Discovery.

Yeah you saw how quickly the white supremacist Federation convicted her. It took all of two seconds to send her to prison for life.

This show takes place in the prime universe, not the rebooted one.

See? It's all over if we're looking to Iron Sky to save the art of film making

    How do you know that?

Part of the brilliance of the reboot was to free-up the plots and character development. The long history made it too restrictive.

I don't think you get to pick and choose which universe you live in. :D

The producers and writers said so, if it was the alternate universe from the movies the differences would be forgivable more but the Klingons still look dumb.

Where do they say this? I'm not disputing just curious; and curious as to why, and how.

I guess if you have two universes to choose from, you have that much more breadth.

So they don't tell you that in the show and they aren't true to the series. That sucks. But in principle I like the idea of having two universes working concurrently. It makes me feel godlike. :D [from an old joke in physics about the God frame of reference - the God frame]

They need to come up with a definitive indicator of the universe involved.
