    They can file all the petitions that they want but the federal government has decreed that self-determination is a capital offense.

    If you secede then you better plan on giving back all of our military equipment. Or there will be hell to pay.

    Why have so few (if any) right wingers congratulated President Obama and the Democrats on their patriotic victory?

    Puerto Rico is going to become the 51st state. So apparently America is a roach motel. You can come in but you can't get out.

    The left has shown interest in getting rid of the red states. Maybe Obama will go along. One good thing is that secession will be solved real quick. They will tell China the US is gone so we don't owe you any money.

    I hope it does happen. We will be better off with a blue nation and a red nation.

    Probably not, actually. The media has essentially overblown the support for statehood there. The referendum created the illusion of high support for statehood by offering multiple choices that were against statehood, and a political movement for independence encouraged hundreds of thousands of voters to leave the referendum blank (over 400,000 voters).

    It's far more likely that the territory will drift towards autonomous rule if it changes at all from the status quo.

    Was talking to a Puetro Rican visiting for thanksgiving. She thinks it is going to happen, and said a lot of people there support it.

    #1: national guard equipment actually is, legally, state equipment (not federal)
    #2: I'm totally fine with that. You guys keep the extravagant military, and you can keep the mountain of debt, too. "Old" United States' debt as % of GDP would skyrocket. I'd love to hear a debt ceiling talk then.

    Independence was an option. Statehood got 800,000 votes, "sovereign free association" got 437,000 votes, independence got 72,560 votes. Over 400,000 left it blank - since 1.3million voted, and only 900,000 voted to change PR's status, it's obvious that most of the blanks were people who didn't vote for a change, though it appears that a good number who voted against the change still had their say in what the change should be. Makes sense. I wouldn't think of stripping someone's say in the future of the island because they voted against changing it.

    Puerto Ricans don't want statehood. Rather, they want free stuff. They just think statehood is a way to get free stuff paid for by someone else.

    Just having fun::::

    If California manages to succeed I think the debt crisis will be over for the federal government as they will not have to fork out the earmarks and will not have to pay the residents social security and medicare.

    Awsome but not going to happen. Their are states that are fighting for their rights in other ways.

    Example: Washington has made marijuana fully legal, regardless of federal laws.

    Succeeding at something is ususally a happy occasion. Why go through so much effort to state the obvious?
