SYRIA VOWS TO ATTACK ISRAEL UNLESS IT WITHDRAWS FROM THE GOLAN HEIGHTS

    Apparently, the threat has been made because Syria thinks the US is about to recognise the Golan Heights as belonging to Israel.

    Should the US go ahead and do that, it wouldn't surprise me at all. That's the world we now live in -- everything is now being twisted back to front. It would be something like recognising a bank robber as being the legal owner of the bank notes he just heisted.

    But I suspect that Syria has no clear military means to carry out its threat?

    The land was taken during a war.
    This is a legal international step of taking war spoils.
    Those who lose pay for it.
    The Golan belongs to the Israelis.

    Legally, any territories taken by Israel during war are regarded as occupied territory, in the same way that, say, Germany occupied France and the Netherlands during WWII. Claiming it as their own is regarded as illegal under international law, as set out by UN Security Council Resolutions of 1979 and 1980, as well as the Fourth Geneva Convention that has been repeatedly affirmed by various entities concerned with international law (UN, ICRC, ICJ etc).

    Israel cannot claim territory during a war, but you are saying Syria is about to?

    Nonsense. It is not a legal international step unless the UN recognizes it as a legal international step - and they have not done so. Nor is your claim that land taken during a war is necessarily legal on an international law basis.

    Preposterous nonsense on all fronts.

    After Syria signed it over to the Israeli's in a disengagement agreement to get Israel to stop kicking their asses, and they've occupied it ever since.
